• Punjab, known for its spirit of innovation and enterprise, has joined the National quest to develop and quickly produce low-cost ventilators in an effort to ramp up medical treatment facilities for an anticipated spike in Covid-19 positive cases in the coming weeks.

An official press release quoting state Industries Minister Sunder Sham Arora said Mohali based M/S Global SPS and M/S Andel India, Ludhiana based M/S Sajjan Precision and Jalandhar based M/S Ceesons Healthcare are already working on mission mode to develop and test low-cost ventilators with active help and support of the State Government through the Department of Industries and Commerce. These vendors are hopeful of developing their prototypes soon and fast track production of ventilators, after getting requite approval from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), it added.

The release said Kapurthala based Rail Coach Factory (RCF) is also in the process of developing and launching an indigenous ventilator. Many other MSMEs have shown interest and are in constant dialogue with the department, which is assisting active units in sourcing technical knowhow, engineering support, medical experts support, metallurgical support and other desired inputs with the help of hospitals and technical institutes of repute. They are also being facilitated in getting necessary approvals.

The release informed that Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and various venture capital funds (VCFs) are actively providing capital at low rate of interest to manufacturing units for this purpose. SIDBI is providing loan @ 5% interest for producing goods and services to protect India against Covid-19 under SAFE (SIDBI Assistance to Facilitate Emergency response against Corona Virus).
