Look to Nature for Solutions

Nobel laureate in chemistry, Prof. Roger D. Kornberg, feels that the future of science is to go back to the basics

PGI Chandigarh’s Bhargava Auditorium was packed to capacity on Wednesday evening. The authorities, not expecting such a rush, had erected temporary curtains to cut down on the capacity of the auditorium, but these had to be dismantled to accommodate the surge of people.

It was one of those special honours for even the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research – hosting Nobel laureate in Chemistry, Prof. Roger D. Kornberg, for his talk on ‘Basic Science : Back to the Future’.

A genial looking Prof.  Kornberg (70), who is currently professor of medicine in the department of structural biology, at the Stanford School of Medicine in the US, had a simple mantra to offer : “Solutions to some of the most challenging and complex medical problems lie in Nature. Have curiosity towards Nature and solutions to the most challenging questions will follow,” he said.

“Not many in the audience would know that what we call as modern medicine is actually 100 years old. As a brash 25-year-old I also erroneously thought that the findings of people who came before me were irrelevant. But no, after 45 years in research I realised that those are as relevant today as they were then. The basics never change,” he averred.

Prof. Kornberg felt that knowledge is limiting. “We might have acquired just a fraction of the information that is there to be had. If we have acquired 0.01 percent of the knowledge, we still have 99.99 percent still to be acquired. So, you can well imagine the enormous opportunities which still lie ahead. Most of the pioneering research which has been done has not been to find solutions to particular medical problems, but because of the yearning to acquire more and more knowledge for knowledge sake, he added.

17 Things We Love About Sector 17

It's the city's most iconic sector and not without reason. We bring you the obvious and not-so-obvious things about Sector 17

Much before the swanky malls opened doors, Sector 17 plaza was the place to head to for a shopping spree. After a brief dip in sales, Sector 17 is in action again but still not buzzing as it used to be on weekends particularly. There are many talks of giving it a makeover and making it a cultural hub as well. While that will happen, when it happens, we feel there are some things about Sector 17 that we have grown to love. You may have your own list too. Here is ours:

1. The layout: Styled like an open mall, we have always liked the fact that there’s something for everyone here. While new age malls offer the comfort of an air-conditioned environment, walking in the corridors of Sector 17 while taking in the fresh air is fun too. Winter sun is bliss here.

2. Softy special: Sector 17 is one place that sells ice-cream, or isn’t it called frozen dessert now, that’s relished all through the year. Summer holidays to the time you had nothing much to shop for, a softy in hand is what Sector 17 is synonymous with. You also have the option of sipping on a cola or strolling in the plaza munching on popcorn.

3. The Book Shops: Be it English Book Shop or Capitol Book Depot or Universal Book store, Sector 17 has been a go-to place to buy the bestsellers and stock up on stationery. The fact that you could browse the shelves at ease without being hounded to buy is an added plus point.

4. Phulkari emporium: When your distant NRI cousin comes visiting and is looking for souvenirs from Punjab, you always steer them to the Phulkari state emporium in Sector 17. They have added new products in the past and are usually well stocked. But count yourself lucky if the sales staff is in a cheerful mood.

5. Indian Coffee House: Yes, it’s always packed to the brim. Yes, there are no air conditioners here. Yes, it can be a long wait for a table but don’t we just love the warmth, the aroma and the food at the Indian Coffee House. We challenge you to walk past it on a weekend and resist the temptation to step in for a piping hot coffee and dosa. The French toasts are good too and despite the trying conditions, the staff is seldom rude. But they will always let you know that ketchup here doesn’t come for free.

6. Run, kids run: We love the fact that there is a lot of open space in Sector 17. Buy the bachcha brigade some balloons and bubble tubes and you will have them out of your hair for good. The excitement is hard to match, though adult supervision a must.

7. The musical fountain show: Every evening the fountains in the plaza turn on a show complete with a medley of music and laser lights. Even if you have caught it a couple times, it is still fun to watch.

8. The umpteen fashion clothing stores: Be it a bridal lehenga or an outfit for the best friend’s wedding; denims or dungarees, branded Western wear to custom made sherwanis for the groom, Sector 17 market offers it all and at different price points. From flowing fabrics to stitched suits to accessories like scarves and stoles, take your pick here.

9. The shoe stores: Just as there are umpteen stores offering clothing options, there are that many shoe stores in Sector 17. Here too there are choices galore and at various price points. We have always found the largest variety of Bata shoes at their Sector 17 store. Ditto for Woodland.

10. The shoe polish team:  The corridor next to Neelam theatre is where you will find the ‘shoe specialists’. For as little as Rs 20 you can give your leather shoe a true makeover. On offer are various services like repair and polish, new laces and even sole jobs. In fact, most times when a neighbourhood mochi is missing in action, you know you can find the man on the job here.

11. Budget conscious: One of the things that we really like about shopping here is that you will find what you are looking for within budget. Big stores like Jainsons, Kapsons, Catwalk, Kohinoor etc realise the need to stock up on all varieties and seldom disappoint.

12. The eating places: A trip to Sector 17 wouldn’t be as exciting if there was no chaat to dig into at Sindhi’s or kathi rolls to munch on at Hot Millions. A number of vendors also offer bhelpuri and roasted sweet potato in the evenings.

13. A place to hang out: Even if you don’t have shopping on the agenda, Sector 17 is big enough to stroll around and window shop. Park yourself on the parapets under the various trees or benches and see the world go around. The vibe is fun and you rarely come back without having spotted a relative or friend.

14. The Bridge Market: That’s a whole new world out there. Clothes, shoes, belts, perfumes…this market space under the bridge in Sector 17 has its own clientele that is looking for casual buys at affordable prices.

15. Kids’ Own: One of the first of its kind play areas in the city, Kids’s Own in Sector 17 has gone on to become a kiddie birthday party hub. We love the play gym areas, the cafe upstairs that dishes out simple yet delicious fare and the alert and always courteous staff, more fondly called ‘didis’ here.

16. Empire Stores: One of the most iconic departmental stores of Sector 17, Empire Stores has been offering everyday essentials under one roof. Anyone who has grown up in Chandigarh, will remember this store as it was one of kind back then.

17. It’s central: Don’t we just love the location? No matter which sector you live in, Sector 17 never really seems far.

Babi’s Re-launches in a New Space

Situated in Sector 10, Babi Grewal’s new studio is spread over two floors and also offers a prêt line apart from the designer’s signature bridal line.

At a time when the neighbourhood ‘Masterji’ was all Chandigarh had access to for getting “designer suits” stitched, there were a handful of ladies who decided to launch their own signature labels. Standing tall among them is Babi Grewal.

Into her 27th year as an independent fashion designer, Babi has come a long way. Known for her bridal collections, a long standing NRI clientele, love for traditional styling, especially embellishments like ‘gota-patti’, the designer’s label ‘Babi’s’ has had a long innings in the Sector 8 market.

This month she has re-launched the fashion label in her new studio in Sector 10. Spread over two aesthetically done up floors, the new studio houses a huge bridal collection. The new launch also marks the designer’s foray into prêt. “It’s been a long innings indeed,” said Babi as we visited her at the new studio.

Since she is a long standing name in the city when it comes to fashion, it’s only natural that we ask her how Chandigarh has evolved sartorially. “I don’t think it would be right to say that it has evolved. Chandigarhians have always been a step ahead of the times. The fashionable set here doesn’t follow trends blindly. They are classy and like classic styles that don’t go out of fashion,” explains Babi.

While kurtas with long lengths are in vogue now, Babi tells us how she’s always been designing them. “One of the reasons for my success is that I haven’t gone all-out contemporary. I like working with traditional embroideries and silhouettes as they are evergreen. It is really heartening to hear a client tell you that she still wears her outfits from her decade-old trousseau I designed for her,” shares the designer who has also included a section on semi-precious jewellery and clutches in her new store. It is in perfect sync with the bridal wear (there’s a special line for summer weddings too). “Pastel hues have been popular even in winter weddings,” says Babi as we notice rows of ornate lehengas in dusty pink and nude shades.

As for her prêt line for summer, the designer is working with fine cotton like Ikat and Mangalgiri as well as Chanderi and chikan. “I am also working on a formal mul-mul line with different kind of embellishments. In summer, we all look for a comfortable fabric to wear and nothing beats mul-mul. I have opted to make it dressier for an evening out,” sums up the designer.

Animation Films on Sikh History Have a Huge Audience

Mohali-based filmmaker Sukhwinder Singh is making a 3D animation film on the life of Bhai Taru Singh; he's previously delivered hit animation films like 'Sahibzadey' and 'Banda Singh Bahadur'

When it comes to animation films and their popularity, Sukhwinder Singh finds not just children but adults also make for an extremely keen audience. He would know. Since 2005, the Mohali-based filmmaker’s animation studio – Vismaad – has dished out a number of animation movies that have found popularity not just in India but the Indian Diaspora overseas.

“Around the birthday celebrations of the chaar sahibzadey, our film ‘Sahibzadey’ made in 2005 gets new number of views on You Tube, where it now available,” says Singh. Incidentally, Vismaad has come to be identified with animation movies made on Sikh history and important Sikh characters. “I feel that Sikh history has been documented well but it hasn’t reached the masses in entirety, especially among children,” explains the filmmaker who claims to have invested over $2 million in his projects. “Our Sikh animation projects are not for profit and the revenue earned is reinvested to create more movies and other digital resources for benefit of the community,” says Singh who credits his work on thorough research. Not surprisingly, he hasn’t had run-ins with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) that looks at such projects with a fine tooth comb.

The filmmaker has now announced his latest film based on the life of Bhai Taru Singh. “Bhai Taru Singh ji lived during the most trying period for Sikhs. Under the Mughal regime, Bhai Taru Singh ji earned respect and love of not just the Hindus but Muslims of all his neighbouring villages. He was martyred because he protected a poor Muslim girl from the clutches of the evil Mughal official of his area,” explains the filmmaker who shares that major part of the movie is “realistic render 3D CGI (computer graphics imagery)”. Special attention has gone into creating the character model of Bhai Taru Singh in the movie with near to life-like features including “realistic animated hair”. “For the first time in Punjabi cinema, leading Sufi singer Kanwar Grewal will make a special appearance in the movie. Shot on chroma, the song sequence will be rendered with special effects to blend the singer as virtually walking the village lanes, fields and ponds with 3D rendered animated characters of villagers in the backdrop,” informs Singh.

The film is currently in post production and the filmmaker hopes to release it a couple of months.

Medanta Opens MediConsult in Chandigarh

Medanta Medicity has opened its OPD centre in Chandigarh at Omni Clinic and Diagnostic Centre; Super specialists from various medical disciplines will offer affordable consulting to patients in tricity

Medanta Group has tied up with Dr Sandeep Singh Chhatwal to setup Medanta’s MediConsult in Omni Clinics and Diagnostics (Sector 34) in the city for running OPDs.

According to Dr Naresh Trehan, chairman and managing director of Medanta-The Medicity, Gurgaon, growing demand from patients in the northern region for various super-specialities has led to this collaboration.

Instead of patients travelling to Gurgaon, the super specialists would be in Chandigarh to examine the patients, said Dr S K S Marya, chairman of Bone and Joint Institute of Medanta. Dr Marya is an international authority in joint replacement and has over 15,000 surgeries including 3500 simultaneous knee replacement and 3000 hip-replacement surgeries to his credit.

Dr. Marya who conducted the first OPD at Omni Clinics on Monday said that not every patient requires joint replacement and since the technology is evolving rapidly the world over, some of the latest techniques are revolutionary which are customized to the patients’ actual needs.

Dr. Sandeep Singh Chhatwal of Omni Clinics and Diagnostics said that the mission is to help the people get right advice at the right time from the right super specialist, which they shall be facilitating. Also present on the occasion was Sukesh Thareja, Vice President of Medanta who informed that some of the super specialists scheduled to visit the city shall be from paediatrics neurology, cancer, cardiaology, neurology, etc., which would be pre-advertised, and the next step would be to setup a tele-medicine facility so that the specialists at Medanta can be consulted by patients at their convenience too.

Medanta-The Medicity was first set up at Gurgaon in January 2010. Now, the Group also operates two others medical facilities – Medanta – Mediclinic and Medanta – Mediclinic Cybercity in New Delhi and Gurgaon respectively.

Meet the Man Behind Salman Khan’s Wardrobe

0

For nearly a decade now, fashion designer Ashley Rebello has designed the superstar’s on-screen and off-screen clothing. So what’s his mantra for success?.

Be it his snug fit uniforms in ‘Dabangg’ or his simple style in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, from his perfectly tailored trousers in ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ to his worn-in kurta-pyjamas in ‘Sultan’, Salman Khan owes his sartorial choices to Ashley Rebello. “The first time I designed for Salman (Khan) was for the film ‘Wanted’. My association with him has entered the tenth year,” said Rebello, who was in Chandigarh for the annual convocation at Inter-National Fashion Institute (INIFD).

Having worked with the actor for so long, Rebello tells us he’s lucky to have found the perfect client. “I have helped build a trust level and Salman is very easy to work with. He lets me take over when it comes to not just his on-screen clothing but personal wardrobe as well,” informs the designer whose designs have gone on to become trends. “I remember spotting many policemen in snug, fitted uniforms after ‘Dabangg’ released. In fact many times, local tailors tell me I should share lookbooks before Salman’s film releases as later everyone wants to dress like him,” Rebello laughed to say.

Speaking of on-screen characters, the designer is hard at work putting together outfits for two forthcoming films starring Salman Khan, of course. “One is ‘Tubelight’ and the other is ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’,” lists out Rebello as he goes on to add, “In ‘Tubelight’, we have gone retro as Salman plays a Himachali. Since the film is set in the early 1960s, you will see Salman dressed in check shirts paired with hand-knitted sweaters, caps and gloves. His shoes play an important role in the script as well.”

Interestingly, Rebello likes to work with local tailors and artists when he is putting together the actor’s wardrobe. “I remember getting a local tailor in Chandigarh to stitch up kurtas for him during the shoot of ‘Sultan’. The sweaters and woollens that Salman will be seen wearing in ‘Tubelight’ have been hand knitted by a women’s group in Ludhiana,” informs the designer. For ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, Rebello says Salman will be seen in a stylish avatar wearing slick suits and formal shirt and trouser combinations.

Given the fact that he puts together seasonal collections for the actor, what do they do with the old stock of clothes, we asked the designer. “I am in-charge of that as well. Salman gifts a lot of his clothes to friends and family. We also distribute many of his clothes at the orphanage and in charity,” says Rebello. And black, he adds, is the actor’s favourite colour.

Mika Goes Loud and Clear

If you have a problem with the morning azaan or kirtan, get your home soundproofed, says singer Mika Singh who was in Chandigarh for a concert

You have to give it to Twitter and the celebrities who tweet incessantly on it for always giving scribes something to write about. Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam recently put out his opinion on the morning azaan emanating from his neighbourhood on Twitter. And like a domino effect, everyone has had something to say on the matter.

Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, popular singer Mika Singh took to Twitter to make it clear that he doesn’t support Nigam’s opinion on banning loudspeakers at places of worship. He even cited late night ‘jagrans’ that singers like both of him have been a part of. “We must be tolerant towards all religions and there is a reason why places of worship have loudspeakers,” said Mika as he spoke to us on the sidelines of his concert in Chandigarh on Saturday evening.

“Be it a mosque or gurudwara, the daily prayers let the devotees know that the place of worship is now open. Also for some, who don’t have a radio or television at home, they have something to listen to,” said the singer who was invited by Red FM as part of its official launch in Chandigarh and Amritsar. Speaking about his recent tweets, he also mentioned how he respects Sonu Nigam ‘bhai’ immensely and would definitely make up with him. “If someone has a problem with the loudspeakers or noise, soundproofing the home is also an option,” he added.

Wearing his signature swag (read dark sunglasses, a striking khanda pendant and a couple of silver chains thrown in) Mika arrived at Leisure Valley to a thunderous applause. “It always feels good to perform in Punjab. It requires a different energy level from me when I sing here,” said Mika who has recently come back from a long tour of the US.

“I did 12 back-to-back shows. It has been my endeavour to showcase Punjabi all across the world. I love live performances; it’s like meditation for me,” said Mika as he also mentioned gifting Paris Hilton a khanda pendant.

As he readied to hit the stage, someone popped the question ‘When will Mika get married?’ To this the singer, in his witty style, remarked, “There are many more eligible bachelors in the country like Rahul Gandhi and Salman (Khan) bhai. But I am known to be a trendsetter. So maybe after I get hitched, they will follow suit,” he chuckled. Quintessential Mika Singh.

The event started at 7 am at Sukhna Lake where people participated in a 2 km and 5 km run. Registrations for the event were done online as well as at the venue. Jugnoo is also running another campaign for tree plantation by selling eco-friendly T-shirts and planting a tree against every T-shirt sold. The participants were given a certificate and geo-tracking code of the tree planted on behalf of them. The event received a good response and volunteers on ground spread the message of protecting the environment.
