The idea that germinated in my mind took me all the way to South Korea to do research on the technique, which basically uses regenerated stem cells sprayed on the face to activate our lymph nodes for stalling ageing (the package costs a cool Rs 25,000 plus applicable tax). Redmi Note 6 Pro, New PRO Series Smart LED TVs Rolled Out

Just eight years old Chinese brand Xiaomi (branded Mi on its entry in India in 2014), better known worldwide for its smart phones with the best specifications and highest quality at unmatched prices, has repeatedly demonstrated that it has read the Indian market inside out. With a small launch of the Mi3 smart phone exclusively on Flipkart, the phenomenal response to which catapulted the brand into an astronomical orbit, the company has not only captured the smart phone market in India, but also the wearables market and most recently the smart television market. The brand showcased its new range of Mi LED Smart TV PRO series sporting a new and refined version of PatchWall based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The earlier smart LED TV range sold a whopping 1 million units within 9 months of launch, following which it was declared the No. 1 smart TV brand in the country as per IDC Report for Q2 of 2018. Business Details & Company Philosophy

Talking to lifeinchandigarh.com, Xiaomi India COO Muralikrishnan B said the smart phones business of the company was showing an exponential growth. In Q2 of 2018 the company sold 11.7 million smart phones, giving it a market share of 27.3 %. The company has been registering a year on year growth of 27 %. During the last Diwali season alone Xiaomi sold 8.5 million units of its smart phones and smart LED TVs.

He said though a majority of the company’s smart phone business was still online, in just one-and-a-half years of launch of its offline business, the company had already captured
39.6 % of the offline smart phone business as per the latest GFK offline market report for September 2018.

Muralikrishnan informed that Xiaomi already had 500-plus Mi Homes (exclusive experience stores) and a network of 4,000-plus preferred partners (multi-brand outlets) across the country, from which it had already simultaneously started selling its smart LED TVs as well. The company has ambitious plans to race to 5,000 Mi Homes by the end of 2019, with the next big push coming from semi-urban and rural markets, he added.

He said, at the same time, the company was also taking steps to massively strengthen its supply chain to keep pace with the rapid expansion of its sales network. Xiaomi already has 6 smart phone manufacturing units in India spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, with nearly 90 % manufacturing of most of its smart phones, including components like mother boards, being done in India.

Muralikrishnan credited the massive success of Xiaomi to its avowed commitment to providing best specifications, high quality and honest pricing in all its products, and company vision of being friends with its users and partners, and being the coolest company in their hearts. “Our ears are always glued to the ground and we design our products after reading the pulse of our customers and partners. Remaining humble always is another trait the company cherishes from the core of the heart,” he emphasised.

Whats Cooking Between New Found Bosom Friends

Imran Khan was always an aggressive cricketer, and this trait in him led Pakistan to its first and only Cricket World Cup title under his captaincy. In later plunging into philanthropy, and gradually progressing to politics, he showed the same grit, painstakingly nursing a fledgling political party to a strong contender for power, and eventually usurping it in a journey spanning nearly three decades. Though his rise to the highest executive seat in the country happened ostensibly because of the strong backing and support of the all powerful Pakistani Army, it does not take all the credit away from the ‘Man of the Match’.

Given this background, Imran, an ethnic Pashtun whose family had long settled in Mianwali, north weste Punjab, in Pakistan, is apparently looking to etch his name in the annals of history. But the crown he has inherited is weighing heavy on his head, with the path of charting a new course for his country paved with thorns.

In the wake of internal strife, an almost intractable economic situation, mounting international pressure, especially from its once closest ally The United States, on the issue of Pakistan not doing enough to rein in international terrorism being bred from its soil, looming danger of international isolation, besides the all important need for doing a balancing act with the Army establishment and the Islamic hardliners, has left him with very little options.

Perhaps, he has had to also rethink his country’s long standing policy of leaning too heavily on China, especially in the light of the recent trade war sparked between the Dragon and the USA, and its repercussions for Pakistan in the future.

The Pakistan Prime Minister’s peace overtures towards India immediately after taking over reins of power, which did not find much traction with the Indian establishment, followed up closely by his government’s pro active action on the Kartarpur corridor, can be seen as Imran Khan’s strategy to give an impression to the international community that his government is serious about pursuing peace with its neighbours and curtailing terrorist activities on its soil targeted at other countries. Creation of the corridor, linking two most revered places associated with first Sikh Guru Nanak Dev on either side of the troubled border (Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab and Kartarpur in Pakistan) has been a long standing demand of the Sikh community and a very emotive issue for it.

Realising that the Indian government is not going to be taken in easily by the rhetoric, and will insist on ground action against the terrorist organisations being harboured and supported by the Pakistan establishment as a precondition for resuming bilateral talks, Imran Khan appears to have resorted the emotive Sikh card in an apparent effort to pressurise the Indian Government into engaging with his government.

And, he has masterfully chosen Navjot Singh Sidhu, his once cricketing rival and now maverick politician from Indian Punjab with a wide fan following, to generate a lot of noise over the corridor becoming a harbinger for peace between the two warring countries. Expectedly, ‘Sixer Sidhu’, as Navjot was popularly called by cricketing fans for his big hitting, has gone over the top after receiving a ‘pump’ from his new found ‘bosom friend’.

The two were never known to be great friends. Sidhu was one of the Indian cricketers invited by Imran to his swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister of Pakistan. While the others politely excused themselves in the wake of the heightened tensions between the two countries, citing their prior commitments, Sidhu, seeing it as another opportunity for getting international attention, went gaga over the invite and publically announced his acceptance of his yaar’s (close friend’s) invitation. His reception at the swearing-in ceremony three months ago, though, was not as warm and pronounced as what he received at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Kartarpur Corridor on the Pakistan side recently. So, what happened that the ‘bosom friendship’ developed so quickly!

Sidhu has been known to play to the galleries with his inimitable one-liners and poetic expressions no matter what the occasion – a public address, official meeting, press conference, cricket commentary or comedy show – and that is what he did with elan during both his ‘personal’ visits to Pakistan.

That Sidhu has bigger political ambitions than just being a minister in the Punjab government is well known. But with fellow cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan ascending to the post of Prime Minister in Pakistan, his ambition appears to have soared further. Imran Khan’s off-the-cuff remark that he hoped that they would not have to wait for Sidhu to become ‘Wazir-e-Azam’ (Prime Minister) of India for the two countries to become friends would have only added fuel to these ambitions.

Having developed serious differences with the leadership of the BJP, a party he represented for nearly 12 years in Parliament, Sidhu was keen on being projected as the chief ministerial candidate in the 2016 state assembly elections in Punjab in a move afoot then to join a buoyant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). But when that did not work out, he joined the Congress midway through the election process saying he was a “bo Congressman” and it was a “homecoming” for him.  

The Congress won the elections handsomely, and Sidhu, tipped to become Deputy Chief Minister, was denied the post by Capt Amarinder Singh, who became Chief Minister. The maverick had to settle for the post of cabinet minister, a situation he has apparently not been able to reconcile with. Not being on the same page with Sidhu on several issues, Capt Amarinder Singh is known to have put his foot down and overruled him on quite a few occasions.

Smarting from these snubs, Sidhu insisted on proceeding to Pakistan in his personal capacity to participate in the Kartarpur Corridor ground-breaking ceremony despite being asked by Capt Amarinder Singh to reconsider his decision. The Chief Minister, a former Army officer, had himself declined the Pakistan invite citing the neighbouring country’s continuing support to terrorism in India and efforts to foment trouble in his own state.

Sidhu has revelled in the attention showered on him by the Pakistan establishment and especially by Prime Minister Imran Khan. In steadfastly supporting the cause of the Kartarpur corridor, and using it as an instrument to press for resumption of official level contacts between the two countries, Sidhu is aiming to win a leadership role in the Sikh community worldwide and further raise his currency in Punjab politics.

To what extent he succeeds in his designs is yet to be seen. People, who applaud his histrionics, also remember his various flip-flops, right from switching to a party he once blamed for all the country’s ills, to accepting the one time “Pappu” as his “Captain” and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his new found “guru” after running him down as a “weakling”.

The recent attempt by Sidhu to run down Capt Amarinder Singh by not recognising the latter as his ‘captain’, and asserting that Congress President Rahul Gandhi is his as also Amarinder Singh’s ‘captain’, is seen as a deliberate action by him, emboldened my his avowed close proximity to the Gandhi family icon.

The Congress President, as then Vice President of the party, was believed to be opposed to naming Capt Amarinder Singh as the chief ministerial candidate in the 2016 state assembly elections, wanting a younger candidate instead, but had to relent as Congress was desperate to win an assembly election to break the string of successive losses across the country. Sidhu is known to have struck a personal understanding with Gandhi before joining the Congress midway through the election process.     

As for India’s response to Pakistan’s offer for resumption of talks, it should necessarily be guided by overall national interests, and keeping the bitter experiences of the past in sharp focus. But at the same time it should not be outrightly dismissed as another ploy. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s assertion that he stands by his word of making a fresh beginning, and that he cannot be held responsible for past happenings, deserves a cautious consideration despite the rhetorical ‘googly’ talk.

CII Proposes Task Force For Gurugram, New Cities Planned Along KMP

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has offered help to the Haryana Government to ramp up its urban infrastructure, especially in Gurugram and in the five new cities planned to be developed along the newly opened Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway. CII President Rakesh Bharti Mittal proposed to raise a task force, to be co-chaired by a minister designated by the Haryana government, aimed at providing support to the state government in raising world class urban infrastructure. The occasion was an interaction Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal had with CII National Council members after their annual meeting at the CII Northern India headquarters in Chandigarh on Friday on the eve of the CII Agro Tech India 2018.

Mittal was responding to the Chief Minister making a pitch for attracting investment in the state, which he claimed was making rapid progress towards becoming the most favoured destination for trade and industry. While observing that a lot still needed to be done to improve basic infrastructure in Gurugram to make it more livable, he said CII would like to share its expertise in the field of urban development with the state government, just as it was doing in case of some of the 100 smart cities being developed across the country.

Assuring the CII National Council of positive action in this direction, the Chief Minister said he will direct the newly formed Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to coordinate with CII. During its four years in power, his government had engaged live with the industry and trade. On the basis of feedback received it had simplified laws and procedures because of which the state had emerged No. 1 in North India in the ease of doing business and No. 3 overall in the country. His government was committed to extend all help to the industry and trade to generate more employment opportunities in the state, he added.

Manohar Lal informed that out of the Rs 5.5 lakh crore worth of MoUs signed during the highly successful Happening Haryana Global Investors Summit 2016 organised by CII in collaboration with the state government at Gurugram, a lot of projects had moved forward with Rs 80,000 crore of investment already on the threshold of crystallisation with a potential of generating one lakh employment opportunities.

He said a forward-looking Haryana Enterprises Promotion Policy was adopted in 2015 and   an online single-roof clearance system created in 2017 in the Haryana Enterprises Promotion Centre for speedy clearances for 70 industrial services of 17 departments to new units and those under expansion to speed up the process of crystallising investment. Out of the 75,000 common application forms (CAFs) received by the centre for big, medium and small projects, more than 50,000 clearances had already been granted. Once the remaining 25,000 odd applications are cleared, the state can expect to receive another Rs 3 lakh crore of investment and 5 lakh employment opportunities, he added.

He also informed the CII National Council members that various industrial clusters and mini clusters were being developed across the state where entrepreneurs were being given attractive subsidies for rapid industrialisation of the entire state.

Tracing the development of highways during these four years, Manohar Lal said besides getting the judicial hurdles cleared and completing the mighty delayed KMP Expressway on fast track, seven more national highways had been added to the existing 13 to take their count to 20. Apart from this, two other expressways to pass through the state were in planning stage – the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway originating from Gurugram.

Talking about efforts being made to strengthen air connectivity, the chief minister said Hisar was being developed as a major aviation hub to add to the existing international airport at New Delhi and Chandigarh. Unlike in case of the Jewar International airport, near Noida in Uttar Pradesh, where a major chunk of the land required for the project was yet to be acquired, the Haryana government already had 8,000 acres of land in its possession near Hisar, he emphasised.

The Chief Minister also addressed the concerns, suggestions and demands of the CII National Council members regarding labour reforms, giving impetus to the housing and construction industry for cascading effect on a host of other industries, logistics parks, integrated terminal markets, bringing natural gas for the industry under GST, taking measures for making power supply cheaper and more affordable for the industry and bringing Faridabad at par with Gurugram. 

Tech Infusion In Agri Ops Must For Doubling Farm Incomes: CII

It’s a premier biennial agri and food technology event which many other states, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, have been unsuccessfully vying to host by taking it away from its fixed abode for the past 26 years. Chandigarh, joint capital of leading agricultural states Punjab and Haryana, is ready to host the 13th edition of the fair and conference, CII Agro Tech India 2018, at the Parade Ground from December 1 to 4 with nearly 200 exhibitors from 14 Indian states and 8 foreign countries participating.

Briefing media persons about the CII Agro Tech India 2018, to be inaugurated by President of India Ram Nath Kovind at 11 a.m. on Saturday, B Thiagarajan, Joint Managing Director, Blue Star Ltd, and Chairman of the ‘States of India’ pavilion at the event, said the theme of this year’s event is ‘Technology In Agriculture: Increasing Farmers’ Income’, “which is apt since we feel that one of the most important interventions required for achieving the national goal of doubling farmers’ incomes by 2022 is infusion of technology in agricultural operations.”

He informed that the three dozen odd exhibitors from the 8 participating countries – Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom and United States of America – will be showcasing and demonstrating advanced agricultural technologies and solutions.

A number of first time launches will happen at the four-day fair. While Canada will showcase its products like swine genetics, grain handling and storage systems, instant quick freezers, etc. to name a few, the country would also be launching new techniques for soil testing, ovine genetics and bacterial treatment equipment.

Great Britain will unveil first of its kind electronic smart watering system, environmentally safe disinfectants, pedigree pigs and genetics, new kind of packaging for long shelf life, besides other products.

Another interesting launch will be unmanned aerial camera and plant protection system from China.  Medium or small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), also known as drones or remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) systems, are increasingly being used for pesticide applications in East Asian countries such as Japan, Korea and China. UAV, which can hover in the air, is able to spray even a single plant in an entire crop.

New veterinary and poultry medicines will be among other exhibits from China. A new type of agriculture land leveller is also being introduced at the CII Agro Tech 2018 which will not only save considerable time but also conserve resources. An all-in-one groundnut planter, harvester, picker and sheller is also being showcased for the first time in India.

Round straw baler, an environment friendly way to collect straw from the field for ease in transportation and storage, will also be introduced during the fair. German companies are introducing one of their unique techniques used for sowing wheat without burning of rice residue. This technology is eco-friendly, preserves health of soil and saves water.

Machines for making wood from cow dung will be another attraction. Lemken India Agro Equipments Ltd. will introduce German technology implements. Farmers growing deep root crops like cotton, sugarcane, soya bean and maize are going for these implements which are able to plough 10 inches deep, while a local plough would be able to dig only 3-4 inchs beneath the soil.

The premier fair will also focus on agri inputs and innovative farming techniques. Interesting displays would include integrated agri business model for wasteland development, kitchen garden, foldable water tank, benefits derived from paddy straw composting and rice transplanters.

‘International Exhibition on Livestock Management’ will focuses on management, production, farming of dairy, poultry, livestock, breeding, healthcare products, supplements, nutrition, egg production, feed production and animal housing. ‘Food Tech’ will focus on the rapidly growing food technology sector while ‘Implementex’ will feature the best of agri and farm implements. Companies engaged in irrigation systems, farm water management, rainwater harvesting, water conservation techniques and aquaculture will also be participating.

Crop insurance, commodity trading, agri and commercial vehicle loans, weather forecasting, drones, consultancy, IT and enabled services will also find prominent space in the fair.

‘Kisan Goshthees’ on all days will share the best practices with farmers on commercial dairy farming, cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, paddy straw management, making agriculture profitable for farmers, to name a few.

India 5G Rollout Dependent On Spectrum Auction; Trials On

While China, South Korea, Japan and United States are among the major countries racing to be the first to launch 5G telecom services, India, which has traditionally been a laggard in the telecom space, may be looking to close the yawning gap by rolling out the Next Gen services as early as in 2021, after their mega launch planned during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan in 2020. The timing of the rollout is dependent on the auction of the spectrum in the 3500 mega hertz (MHz) band in the country. Trials are already on in various countries across the world, including in India. For a nationwide rollout of 5G network, the capacity of the current mobile telecom transmission network, which is currently 2.5 lakh towers strong, will have to take a three-fold leap. These indications were available during an interaction lifeinchandigarh.com had with senior officials of Indus Towers, the country’s biggest, and the world’s second largest telecom tower company, in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Earlier, in a news conference, officials presiding over the company’s operations in North India revealed that as part of its go green drive the company has been able to save 44 lakh litres of diesel last year in Punjab and Haryana circles alone by shutting down its diesel-powered gen sets (now being used only in case of emergencies) and doing away with use of air conditioners at most of its tower sites. This has been made possible with a significant improvement in the availability of electricity, and induction of more robust equipments, which can be installed in the open, and not necessarily in enclosed spaces, as was the case with earlier equipments requiring air conditioning to keep them cool.

Gagan Kapoor, Circle CEO – Punjab & Haryana, Indus Towers Ltd, informed that out of the company’s portfolio of 8900 towers in the two states, covering 94,000 sq kms and customer base of seven crores, as many as 61 percent have been converted into green towers. The company’s vision is to have 100 percent diesel-free tower operations in the next 2-3 years. The company has already pumped in Rs 700 crore in expanding its tower network in the two states during the past five years, and plans to add another 600 more towers to its existing portfolio by 2019, he added.

Promoted under a joint venture between Bharti Infratel Ltd, Vodafone India Ltd and Aditya Birla Telecom Ltd in 2007, Indus Towers Ltd today has presence in 15 telecom circles in India with a tower portfolio of 1,23,000-plus and has achieved 2.78,000-plus tenancies (number of antennae and other active infrastructure put up by tenants (telecom operators) on all towers), including of Airtel, Idea-Vodafone, Jio and BSNL.

You are a matriculate, aged between 21-60 years, and own a chunk of land which in the eyes of the public sector oil marketing companies is in a viable area not covered by their existing vast network of retail outlets, then here’s a golden chance to own a petrol pump of your own. Under a nationwide rollout, except in the five poll-bound states, where the code of conduct is in force, the three state owned oil marketing companies – BPCL, HPCL and IOCL – on Sunday announced offers to Indian citizens to open up thousands of new retail outlets as part of a massive expansion drive.

In Chandigarh, IOCL Chief General Manager Sandeep Jain, who is also state level coordinator for the oil industry in Punjab, accompanied by senior officials from the other two companies, told media persons that 2740 new outlets from all the three state owned oil marketing companies together were up for grabs in the state – 1584 regular outlets and 1156 rural outlets – to add to a network of 3200 existing outlets.

For ease of doing business and for greater transparency in allotment, all the earlier cumbersome processes have been done away with. Now any person desirous of running a retail outlet just needs to visit the web site www.petrolpumpdealerchayan.in, go through the brochure and advertisement and register online for any of the listed sites of any of the three oil marketing companies.

Persons already owning land and those who are in possession of a letter of purchase of land will be given first and second preference respectively, though a third category of people, who do not have any committed land with them will also be considered in case there are no takers from the first two categories of applicants. A computerised draw of lots will be held wherever there are more than one applicant for a particular site.

For the first time no documentation will be asked for upfront and the process of furnishing and verification of documents will be initiated only after a person is selected and granted a letter of intent (LOI) from the respective oil marketing company. This time the norm of multiple dealerships not being allowed in a single name has also been relaxed, allowing existing petrol pump owners to apply for more outlets.

Reservations have been made for various categories of applicants.

The registration process began on Sunday itself and online applications will be entertained till December 24. An applicant can expect to complete the online registration in just 5-10 minutes, assured the officials, who also claimed that with the recent “handsome” revision of commissions and incentives offered by the oil marketing companies, owning a petrol pump  had become more lucrative. The companies will themselves undertake laying of the entire basic infrastructure using the latest automation technology, leaving little for the successful applicant to spend from his own pocket.

However, going by the experience in the past, when not more than 15-17 percent of the advertised outlets were taken up, the oil marketing companies are not expecting all sites on offer to be allotted. The last round of allotments had taken place in 2014.

The officials informed that the retail sales of petrol and diesel are increasing nationwide at an average rate of approximately 8% and 4% respectively, though these figures differ slightly from state to state.

The expansion of retail outlet (petrol pump) network is being undertaken by the oil marketing companies primarily to meet the growing fuel needs and convenience of customers in emerging markets like upcoming highways, agricultural pockets and industrial hubs. The retail outlet network in rural, remote and far-flung areas is also being expanded with an aim of primarily making available quality and fair-priced high speed diesel (HSD) to agricultural communities and people living in remote areas, they added.

Nuclear Medicine Safe; Targeted Procedures Show Quick Results, Say PGI Docs

Taking advantage of the occasion provided by the Golden Jubilee Annual Conference of Society of Nuclear Medicine, India (SNMICON 2018), being hosted by PGI Chandigarh from November 22 to 25, top doctors from the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the prestigious tertiary healthcare institute have sought to reassure the people that nuclear medicine procedures used for targeted early and effective medical diagnosis and treatment with the help of radioactive isotopes are strictly regulated and absolutely safe.

Recent advances in nuclear medicine therapies have significantly improved treatment outcomes, especially in prostate cancer and neuro-endocrine tumours. Investigations like gamma camera imaging and PET-CT imaging are being used daily almost in every branch of medicine and surgery, including cardiology, oncology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and urology, on patients of all age groups, from new-borns to geriatric age group.

Significant research work is also being conducted in various fields, including study of brain function in diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Schizophrenia, sports injuries and Tuberculosis, along with advanced studies in various types of cancers, they informed.

Interacting with media persons on the eve of SNMICON 2018 on Wednesday, Prof BR Mittal, head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Prof Baljinder Singh and Prof Anish Bhattacharya said India in fact has been a pioneer in structured teaching of this branch of medicine since the 1960s. The expansion of the speciality in the country though has been tardy and lagged far behind some of the advanced countries, including USA.

“There are 6,000-odd centres practicing nuclear medicine in the USA which are benefiting some 18 million citizens each year from nuclear medicine procedures used to diagnose and treat a wide variety of diseases. As against this, there are currently less than 300 centres in India as per the recently released list (July 2018) of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board,” the doctors shared.

According to the doctors, though nuclear medicine procedures are increasingly finding acceptability in effective and early diagnosis and treatment of a host of diseases, the challenge lies in making continuous efforts to indigenously develop various imaging devices and machines, and more advanced isotopes and tracers to drastically cut down the high costs and further improve outcomes. These indigenous solutions can then be expanded across the country, including in peripheral areas, to benefit large sections of the people, they added.

At the four-day conference, nuclear medicine physicians from across the country and abroad will discuss current problems in management of cancer as well as thyroid and cardiac diseases.

Fortis Urology Transplant Surgeon Defies Medical Science To Save Life

The age old dictum – never give up despite all odds – especially when you can save a life has miraculously proven true for a noted urology transplant surgeon from the Chandigarh region. He has defied established medical science to repair a kidney after removing a malignant tumour and successfully transplant the residual organ onto a related patient of chronic renal failure who had lost all hope of survival. Presenting before media persons on Tuesday the husband-wife patient duo involved, Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, Senior Consultant in Urology, Robotics and Kidney Transplant at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, claimed that this is perhaps the first such case in the world and has shattered previously held medical belief that kidneys with tumour are not to be considered for purpose of transplantation.

Sangrur resident Ravinder Sharma (42), General Manager with Punjab Markfed, who has been suffering from chronic renal failure and intermittently been on medication and dialysis for the last more than two years and shuttling between hospitals, was eventually advised kidney transplant for survival. His wife Rosy, who was found to be the only suitable donor in the family with their blood group O+ve matching, was, on medical investigation, diagnosed with a four-cm tumour in one of her kidneys. So far medical science had shunned even considering tumour bearing kidney for transplant. But after getting a CT scan conducted on the wife, weighing the risks and deriving courage from the confidence reposed in him by the family, Dr Ranjan decided to take the plunge into unchartered territory to save a man staring at near certain death.

And, four months after Rosy’s ailing kidney was harvested, repaired and reconstructed after removing the malignant tumour, and transplanted onto Ravinder, both husband and wife are back to their normal life. Ravinder, who said he had not slept for months after being told that the only suitable donor kidney, that of his wife, could not be transplanted onto him, claimed that he was feeling ten times fitter than he ever felt before being diagnosed with chronic renal failure. “I am now a regular at the gym. I walk and run daily and travel miles every day to and from work. It is as if I am still living a dream, from a hopeless situation to a life full of fun and positive outcomes.”

Says Dr Ranjan, who is preparing to present the case at the next American Transplant Congress scheduled to be held in June next year at Boston, Massachusetts, and send it for publication in prestigious medical journals, said “One big take away from this case is that never out rightly reject a situation on which solely rests the survival of a patient. Do your best, and leave the rest to God. In this case, I believe, all of us, the medical team and the family, were working together for God.”

Dr Ranjan highlighted that “such procedure requires high level of skill and expertise. The most critical consideration was suppression of bleeding, which could have been profuse considering that millions of micro vessels are attached to the kidney. Then there was danger of urine leaking and recurrence of malignancy. Fortunately, we have been able to achieve a good outcome in this patient,” he added.

Global, Indian Brands Move In, Anticipating High Volume Air Travel

A shopping arcade with all top brands, a must for any major airport, is coming alive at the Chandigarh International Airport in preparation for the start of 24X7 air operations for all sizes of aircraft from the airport by March 31, 2019. Out of the 36 shops to be opened in a 14,000 sq feet area, 15 started operating on Thursday, officials of Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), which operates the airport, Three Vee Marketing, the master concessionaire, and JLL, the exclusive leasing partner for the retail space, announced at a news conference in Chandigarh.

Among the global and Indian retail brands which have already opened shop are Da Milano, Kama Ayurveda, Tresmode, Sun Glass Hut, Eske, Shaze, Shingora, W & Aurelia, Hamleys, Mother Care, Joias, Change, Pehnawa, Manyavar, Relay, Handmade India and Color Essense. Airports Authority of India Chairman Guruprasad Mahapatra formally launched the retail space in the presence of representatives of the brands. These brands cover a wide range of products and services like apparel, wellness, convenience, travel, books, electronics, fashion accessories, opticals, watches, jewellery and cosmetics. Duty free and food & beverage outlets are already operating from the airport.

Vivek Nijhawan, Director, Three Vee Marketing, informed that while choosing brands for the shopping arcade care is being taken that most segments of products and services in demand specifically at Chandigarh International Airport are available to travellers. He claimed that travel retail is growing at a brisk pace and they are targeting to make all 36 stores operational before the coming Christmas, with 25 brands already finalised.

Three Vee Marketing won the bid for the retail space from among three applicants. Nijhawan said they will be working on a minimum guarantee or revenue sharing model, whichever is higher.

Deepesh K. Joshi, Manager (Engg-E) and PRO of CHIAL, shared that all facilities at the airport are being ramped up ever since the India Air Force authorities at Chandigarh, which are handling the expansion work at the airport, committed to handing over the expanded and upgraded runway by March 30, 2019.

100 Flights Being Targetted

One more conveyor belt, three aero bridges, an escalator and five bays for parking of aircraft are being added to cater to a much higher volume of traffic expected at the airport. “With an  extended 10,400 feet runway and Cat 2 ILS (instrument landing system) becoming operational by March end 2019, we are expecting the number of flights operating from the airport to gradually increase manifold to an expected 100 from 32 (2 of them international) operating as on today. The ILS will be further upgraded to Cat 3 by the winter of 2019. We are in the process of writing to domestic and international airlines informing them of our readiness with required facilities to take the extra load of wide bodied aircraft 24X7 and are expecting a good response,” Joshi added.

Currently, the airport is operational only from 7:20 am to 4:45 pm when the visibility without Cat 2 ILS is good.
