Among the mandates and research areas of the institute, which have been achieved to a significant extent already, is to develop designer crops with high nutrition, increased shelf life and processing quality.

Among some of the laurels of the institute has been development of low glycemic (GI) wheat lines which ensure release of comparatively low quantities of glucose in the body and at a much slower rate.

Developing a 20-fold higher content of beta carotene, a vital antioxidant for overall wellbeing of the human body, in banana fruit has been another achievement of the institute, he added.

“It has been a wonderful decade long journey for the institute during which it has been successful in combining excellence in science with development of products relevant to society,” Dr Sonti remarked.
