3 Independent MLAs Withdraw Support To Nayab Saini Govt, Reducing It To Minority

0
Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda addresses a press conference in Rohtak on Tuesday where three independent MLAs supporting the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government announced switching their support to the Congress

However, no immediate threat of the government falling; Constitution provides cushion of 4 more months; assembly elections due in Sept-Oct

Weeks ahead of the May 25 Lok Sabha polls in the state, three of the independent Haryana MLAs supporting the Nayab Singh Saini led BJP government on Tuesday (07.05.2024) announced that they are withdrawing their support to the government and henceforth will be supporting the Congress, reducing the government to a minority, but with no immediate threat of the government falling.

Though the three MLAs – Sombir Sangwan from Charkhi Dadri, Dharampal Gondar from Nilokheri, and Randhir Gollen from Pundri – made the announcement in the presence of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state Congress president Udai Bhan at a press conference in Rohtak, they are yet to convey their withdrawal of support decision in writing to the Vidhan Sabha speaker.

Earlier, there was speculation that a fourth independent MLA supporting the government – Rakesh Daulatabad from Badshapur – would also join them in announcing the decision but at the time of the evening press conference only these three turned up.

At the press conference, state Congress president Udai Bhan asserted that the BJP with 40 MLAs in the 90-member vidhan sabha (with a current strength of 88), and needing support of 45 members for a majority, had been reduced to a minority. Therefore, the Nayab Singh Saini government had no moral right to stay in office. The chief minister should resign immediately and fresh elections should be held to the Vidhan Sabha, he added.

On the other hand Hooda demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state.

However, this is unlikely to happen because of the constitutional provision which provides cushion of four more months to the Nayab Singh Saini government, which successfully defeated a no-confidence motion piloted by the Congress on March 13, 2024 immediately after Manohar Lal unexpectedly resigned as chief minister and Saini took over from him.

At that time the BJP government had been supported by these three and other independent MLAs along with some legislators from the JJP despite the BJP-JJP having earlier broken off their more than four years post-poll alliance. As per a constitutional provision, no-confidence motion cannot be brought up in the state assembly for six months from the date of the last motion.

Even otherwise, with assembly elections due to be held in the state in September-October this year, no party, including the Congress, would seriously try to topple the government. Congress, the second largest party in the state assembly, with 30 MLAs, 10 less than the ruling BJP, does not find itself in a comfortable position to muster a majority.

It was widely anticipated that the independent MLAs, who supported the Nayab Singh Saini government sail through the no-confidence motion, will be accommodated in the new ministry, but that did not happen, which could be one of the reasons for three of them to switch their support to the Congress.

It remains to be seen how much this switchover will help the Congress in its electoral prospects both in the forthcoming Lok Sabha, as well as the following Vidhan Sabha elections.

High Profile Exits From Delhi Congress: Did Party Get It Wrong!

0
Former two-time Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely being welcomed into the BJP fold by Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri as party's national general secretary Vinod Tawde and others look on.
All five who joined BJP – Arvinder Singh Lovely, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Naseeb Singh, Neeraj Basoya, and Amit Malik – are influential grassroots leaders

The recent spate of resignations by high profile Congress leaders in Delhi, protesting the party’s alliance with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which the grand old party has all along been holding responsible for its downfall in the National Capital on the basis of “fake charges of corruption” against the then Congress government in the state, has further queered the political pitch for the grand old party.

The choice of two party candidates Kanhaiya Kumar (North East Delhi) and Udit Raj (North West Delhi) has also been a sticking point in the dissent within the Delhi Congress as they are being termed as “total strangers to Delhi Congress”.

High profile former Delhi Congress leaders Arvinder Singh Lovely, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Naseeb Singh, Neeraj Basoya, and Amit Malik joining the BJP. By striking an unequal alliance with its now INDIA block partner AAP – it is contesting three Lok Sabha seats (Chandni Chowk, North East Delhi, and North West Delhi), leaving the remaining four (New Delhi, South Delhi, West Delhi, and East Delhi) to the ruling party in the state – the Congress was hoping to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and pick up a few seats to safeguard its existence in Delhi.

But by imposing its decision on a dissenting state party, the high command may just have got its calculations wrong.

The five Delhi state Congress leaders, who resigned from the party one after the other, and later together joined the BJP (which won all seven Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 and 2019 general elections, with a vote share exceeding 50%), are all very influential leaders and are sure to hurt the electoral prospects of not only the Congress, but also the alliance as a whole.

While Arvinder Singh Lovely, the most prominent among the five, has been state party president twice, successive four times MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency (1998-2015) and cabinet minister for 10 long years in the Sheila Dikshit led Congress government, Raj Kumar Chauhan represented Mangol Puri assembly constituency for four consecutive terms (1993-2013) and remained minister for 10 years.

Naseeb Singh has represented Vishwas Nagar for three consecutive terms (1998-2013) and Neeraj Basoya won the Kasturba Nagar seat in 2008. Moreover, both Naseeb Singh and Neeraj Basoya had also been appointed the AICC (All India Congress Committee) observers for North West Delhi and West Delhi seat in the forthcoming elections.

Amit Malik, apart from being the party’s Delhi youth wing president, has also led the Delhi unit of its students wing (NSUI), besides remaining president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in the past.

Arvinder Singh Lovely addressing a press conference to announce his resignation as Delhi Congress president

By appointing Devendra Yadav, AICC in-charge of Punjab, as interim president of Delhi Congress, the party has further exposed the glaring contradictions in its alliance with AAP. While in Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, and Chandigarh, the two parties are in an alliance, AAP insisted, and is contesting all 13 Lok Sabha seats alone in Punjab, where also it is the ruling party and Congress is its bitter rival. In these two positions, Devendra Yadav will find it increasingly difficult to publicly reconcile the party’s two diametrically opposite stands towards the AAP.

As for the two Lok Sabha candidates from Delhi in the eye of the storm within the party, Kanhaiya Kumar, a highly controversial former president of the Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU), had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as a CPI candidate from Begusarai in Bihar but lost by a big margin to Giriraj Singh of the BJP. He joined the Congress in 2021.

Udit Raj, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who hails from Uttar Pradesh, after resigning from service had launched his own Indian Justice Party (IJP), which he had later merged with the BJP in 2014. Soon after, the dalit leader fought the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on the BJP ticket from North West Delhi (SC) constituency, defeating former cabinet minister and current deputy speaker of the Delhi legislative assembly Rakhi Birla of the AAP by over one lakh votes. He left the BJP and joined the Congress in 2019 after being denied re-nomination as the party candidate by the saffron party ahead of the lok sabha elections.

Rahul Gandhi Shifts Venue Of Home Game To Last Family Bastion, Raebareli

0
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filing his nomination papers from Raebareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh on 03.05.2024. He is also contesting from Wayanand in Kerala, where polling has already been held.
His mother Sonia Gandhi had retained the seat in 2019 despite the Modi wave, through by a much reduced margin of 1.67 lakh votes

Having played out a difficult away game, to use IPL parlance, at Wayanad in Kerala, Rahul Gandhi is finally back to play an even more difficult home game, not in Amethi, but in Raebareli, the last bastion standing of the Gandhi family in their traditional home state Uttar Pradesh.

Ending weeks of suspense over party nominations to the two seats traditionally held by the Gandhi family, the Congress at the eleventh hour early on Friday morning released a list of party candidates, naming Rahul Gandhi from Raebareli and longtime family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi, where the former had lost for the first time since 2004 to Smriti Irani of the BJP by 55,000 votes in the 2019 general elections.

Friday being the last day of filing nominations for the constituency, which goes to the polls in the fifth phase on May 20, Rahul rushed to Raebareli to file his papers. He was accompanied to the returning officer’s office by his mother Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and brother-in-law Robert Vadra. Earlier, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress General Secretary Incharge of Organisation KC Venugopal were also seen with the Gandhi family at the airport.

This is the second time Sonia Gandhi is leaving her seat for her son. Entering the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1999 from Amethi, a seat held earlier by her assassinated husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, she made way for her son’s maiden election from the seat in 2004 and moved to Raebareli. She held the seat for 20 years before vacating it recently on shifting to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

Raebareli, along with Amethi, have been the Gandhi family’s boroughs. Barring two truncated terms, when Raj Narain of the Janata Party held the seat post the Emergency (1977-1980) defeating Indira Gandhi, and Ashok Singh of the BJP represented the constituency in 1996-1999, it has been held at various times since 1952 by a member of the Gandhi family or people close to it.

After Indira Gandhi’s husband Feroze Gandhi initially held the seat from 1952-1960, the constituency has been represented by Congress leaders RP Singh (1960-1962), Baijnath Kureel (1962-1967), Indira Gandhi (1967-77, 1980), Arun Nehru (1980-1989), Sheila Kaul (1989-1996), Rajiv Gandhi’s close friend and associate Satish Sharma (1999-2004), and Sonia Gandhi (2004-2024).

Despite the Modi wave, Sonia Gandhi held on to the seat in 2019, winning by a reduced but fair margin of 1.67 lakh votes. Hence, it is being considered a safer seat for Rahul Gandhi than Amethi.

Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from Raebareli comes a day after the BJP on Thursday, after patiently waiting for the Congress move, finally announced the re-nomination of Uttar Pradesh minister and three-time legislative council member (MLC) Dinesh Pratap Singh as the party candidate from the constituency. A grassroots level leader, he had given Sonia Gandhi a spirited fight in the 2019 elections, eventually reducing her margin of victory from 3.52 lakh votes in 2014 to 1.67 lakh votes.

Now on, Raebareli will become the hotbed of electioneering, with the Congress and its alliance partner, Akhilesh Singh-led Samajwadi Party (SP), in Uttar Pradesh, as also the entire INDIA alliance rallying behind Rahul Gandhi to ensure his victory and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marshalling all its forces to defeat him. The Congress is contesting 17 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh leaving the remaining 63 seats to the SP as part of a seat-sharing deal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took no time in attacking Rahul Gandhi. Addressing an election rally at Bardhman, West Bengal he said he had already said that ‘shahabzade’ is losing from Wayanad and out of fear of losing from Wayanad, immediately after polling is over he will start looking for another seat for himself. Now he has had to run away from Amethi and choose the Raebareli seat.

Taking a further dig at Rahul Gandhi’s repeated use of the words ‘darro matt’ (don’t be afraid) while addressing the prime minister in his speeches, he said these people are going around and telling everyone ‘darro matt’….. I will also tell them this – ‘darro matt, bhaago matt’ (don’t be afraid, don’t run)

It Was Tough On Rinku, We Needed Another Bowling Option, Says Agarkar

0
Indian captain for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Rohit Sharma and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar at a press conference where they answered questions on the selection of the 15-member Indian squad for the tournament to be held in USA and Caribbean

Rohit admits he personally wanted four spinners and Hardik as seam all-rounder in the 15-member squad

At the much anticipated press conference on Thursday regarding the selection of the 15-member Indian squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup announced on Tuesday, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar expressed their views on various aspects of the selection, including the much debated omission of Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya’s role as all-rounder.

Frankly, some views were convincing, while others were not so convincing.

Following are the excerpts

On the influence of IPL 2024 season in determining the T20 World Cup squad: Rohit informed that the selection committee and the leadership group decided on the core of the squad well before the IPL and stressed that only a couple of slots or individuals were left to be decided during the IPL season.

On Rinku Singh’s omission from the squad: That was the toughest decision to make. Not his fault that he missed out. Did nothing wrong, and Shubman Gill as well for that matter. It was all about the combination we wanted. We wanted to play an extra bowler, wanted to have enough options with regards to wrist spinners, Chahal, Kuldeep give us that. Axar Patel is a bowling all-rounder in form and then the two wicketkeeper-batsmen. It was obviously tough on Rinku, but at the end of the day we had to choose just 15, Agarkar said.

Picking four spinners: The reason for four spinners I won’t reveal now and will reveal in West Indies. I personally wanted four spinners and Hardik as seam all-rounder. Axar, Jadeja being good batters and Kuldeep and Chahal being attacking spinners gives us good balance, said Rohit.

On Shivam Dube’s inclusion: One thing that we looked at was middle-order hitting. Our top-order hitting has been alright, not that bad, though there are options there as well. We wanted someone to play that role in the middle overs freely, without worrying about who is bowling. Shivam Dube was the guy who showed this in IPL and before that in domestic cricket.

But our playing XI isn’t guaranteed, will decide based on conditions and the combination of our opposition. We don’t know how the pitch is going to be like in New York. We have played in the West Indies, but we are playing each match at a different venue. You have to look at the opposition combinations as well.

On Hardik Pandya’s role as an all-rounder: As long as he is fit and available, we always wanted Hardik Pandya in the squad, there was never doubt over it. We all know what he brings to the table, it gives a lot of options to the captain. He has been bowling right through the IPL, and there does not appear to be any fitness concerns as of now, Agarkar said.

Will Shivam Dube bowl: We expect all-rounders to do what they’re doing in the IPL. Unfortunately, Shivam hasn’t bowled a single over in IPL. But he is an experienced cricketer and adept at bowling with the red ball. So, if we want Shivam to bowl a few overs, he will be bowling few overs. Same with Hardik,” Rohit Sharma said.

Regarding lingering concerns in some quarters about Virat Kohli’s strike-rate: We haven’t been discussing Kohli’s strike-rate. There is a difference between IPL and international cricket. You need experience. We have got enough balance and power in the team. You look and try and take positives from what is happening in IPL. Pressure of a World Cup is different, said Ajit Agarkar.

On KL Rahul being ignored: Ajit Agarkar said KL Rahul is a terrific cricketer. He is currently batting at the top of the order, but we needed someone in the middle. Rishab Pant and Sanju Samson are the perfect fit for that slot.

Identical Email With Hoax Bomb Threat To 80 Delhi, NCR Schools Traced To Russian IP Address

0

Suspected international organisation’s role being probed

Right in the middle of the National elections in the country, an identical email, carrying bomb threat, received in the wee hours on Wednesday by around 80 schools in Delhi, and Noida in their official mail boxes, caused frenzied activity, with bomb detection and disposal squads and fire services squads in the dozens being rushed to the schools, which were shut down for the day and children sent back home.

After thorough searches at all these schools, the threat was found to be a hoax, but as a precautionary measure Delhi Police raised a general alert and stepped up security at metro and railway stations, bus stands and markets.

Initial probe by various investigating agencies has traced the origin of the identical mails from mail id ‘sawariim@mail.ru’ to a Russian IP address. The involvement of a suspected international organization behind the threats is being further investigated.

The Arabic word ‘sawaraiim’ (literally meaning clashing of the swords) used in the mail id has reportedly been used by the dreaded international terror group Islamic State since 2014 to spread its propaganda.

Similar threats received by airports and hospitals in the last couple of days point towards a coordinated conspiracy, an angle under thorough investigation by the central agencies.

Though largely the school managements were able to keep the children calm, some schools reportedly faced challenges pacifying the panicky parents. Some schools are considering issuing  a circular for parents, outlining the standard operating procedure to guide them on how to react in adverse situations like these.

Is there a lesson here for school management across the country!

India Squad Named For ICC Men’s T20 World Cup; Is It Geared To Win!

0

Hardik Vice-Captain; Kohli, Jadeja, Chahal, Samson, Dube in; Shubhman Gill, Rinku Singh reserved; KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan completely ignored

Trust the selectors and the team management have given equal credence to overall performance, and not limited their selection criteria to performances in the current edition of the IPL, while naming the 15-member India squad with four reserves on Tuesday (30.04.2024) for the June ICC T20 World Cup being jointly organized for the first time at six locations in the West Indies and three in the USA.

As expected the captaincy remains with ‘hitman’ Rohit Sharma, and, with an eye on the future, Hardik Pandya, retains the vice captain’s role. Virat Kohli has won his place in the squad, and so have wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, wicketkeeper-batsmen Rishab Pant and Sanju Samson, and hard-hitting batsman Shivam Dube.

Among the notable expectants ignored are Rohit’s deputy in many a campaign and wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, and Rinku Singh, though the latter two unlike Rahul and Ishan at least find a place among the reserves.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the natural choice opening partner with Rohit. Virat takes the No. 3 spot followed by Suryakumar Yadav in the role of link between the top and the middle order, which comprises first choice wicketkeeper-batsman Rishab Pant, medium pace allrounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, and spinning allrounders Ravinder Jadeja and Axar Patel.

Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are the regular wrist spinners in the squad, and the pace attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, has Mohammad Siraj and Arshdeep Singh in the line-up.

The 15-member squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK-batsman), Sanju Samson (WK-batsman), Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan

Raja Warring To Take On ‘Deserter’ Ravneet Singh ‘Bittu’, As Cong Names 4 More LS Candidates From Punjab

0
Amrinder Singh Brar 'Raja Warring'

Releasing a fresh list of four party candidates from Punjab, the Congress high command has put its state party president Amrinder Singh Brar ‘Raja Warring’ through an acid test by fielding him from Ludhiana constituency against two time running party MP Ravneet Singh ‘Bittu’, who caused a huge embarrassment to the party by deserting it and joining the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

With this the party has named candidates to 12 of the 13 parliamentary constituencies in the state, leaving its options for Ferozepur seat still open.

Others named in the list released on Monday (29.04.2024) are former Punjab deputy chief minister and three times running Dera Baba Nanak MLA, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa from Gurdaspur; former Sangrur Lok Sabha member and ex-cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla from Anandpur Sahib; and former Zira MLA Kulbir Singh Zira from Khadoor Sahib, replacing incumbent party MP Jasbir Singh Gill ‘Dimpa’, who had opted out of the race, preferring to concentrate on state politics.

Immediately after the announcement of his candidature from Ludhiana, Raja Warring took to X (formerly Twitter) to attack Ravneet Singh Bittu without naming him. While expressing his readiness to “embark on another battle after my party leadership posed confidence in me to contest from Ludhiana”, he commented, “Those individuals, once entrusted with responsibilities and showered with support by the party, turned out to be deserters.”

The three-times running MLA from Gidderbaha assembly segment, which falls under Faridkot parliamentary constituency, and former cabinet minister further said, “First, it was against the power of the Badals in Bathinda, and now it’s against these deserters. Counting on the unwavering support of the people of Ludhiana.”

Raja Warring had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Bathinda against former Union minister and then two time incumbent MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), giving her a good fight. The latter had won a third straight term in the Lok Sabha by a margin of less than 22,000 votes.

The other candidates from major parties in the fray are Ludhiana (central) MLA Ashok Prashar (Pappi) of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and ex-MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon of the SAD.

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, named the party candidate from Gurdaspur, is contesting Lok Sabha elections for the first time.

A four-time MLA from Dera Baba Nanak assembly segment which falls under the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency, Randhawa, who was elevated from the post of cabinet minister to deputy chief minister after the party high command decided to replace Capt Amarinder Singh with Charanjit Singh Channi as Punjab Chief Minister months ahead of the March 2022 assembly elections in the state, is up against former Vidhan Sabha deputy speaker and three-times MLA from Sujanpur assembly segment Dinesh Singh ‘Babbu’ of the BJP.

Gurdaspur has been a stronghold of the BJP as part of its now broken long standing alliance with the SAD. Film star, late Vinod Khanna had won the seat four times in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014, and Sunny Deol is the party’s incumbent MP. In between though, Pratap Singh Bajwa of the Congress won the seat in 2009 and Sunil Jakhar, then with the Congress won a by-election necessitated by Vinod Khanna’s death in 2017. After switching over to the BJP, Jakhar is now state party president of the saffron party.

The other candidates in the fray from Gurdaspur are Batala MLA Amansher Singh ‘Sherry’ Kalsi of the ruling AAP and senior SAD leader and former cabinet minister Daljit Singh Cheema.

Cheema, who represented Rupnagar assembly segment, falling under Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency, from 2012-2017, and became Education minister in the SAD-BJP government led by Prakash Singh Badal, had earlier unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 from Anandpur Sahib constituency, and had lost to then rookie Congress  candidate and assassinated Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s grandson Ravneeet Singh ‘Bittu’.

Cheema’s home village by the same name falls in Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency.

Vijay Inder Singla

Moving to the Anandpur Sahib constituency, Vijay Inder Singla, who has been named the party candidate, has represented the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat in 2009-2014, though in the next election in 2014 he lost badly to the current Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann. In 2017, he won the Sangrur assembly seat and became a cabinet minister in the Capt Amarinder Singh led Congress government. He however, lost the seat by a big margin in the AAP wave which swept the state in 2022 assembly elections.

This is the second time in recent times that the Congress has moved former MPs from other constituencies to Anandpur Sahib. In 2019, former MP from Ludhiana Manish Tewari was fielded from this constituency, and he won. He has finally been granted the party ticket from Chandigarh, his birth place, to which he had been staking claim all along.

Singla is up against veteran SAD leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, who won the seat in 2014 but lost in 2019 to Manish Tewari.

For the ruling AAP, its spokesperson and former senior student leader Manvinder Singh Kang is in the race.

The BJP’s search for a suitable candidate to field from Anandpur Sahib is continuing.

Kulbir Singh Zira

Kulbir Singh Zira, the candidate named by the Congress from Khadoor Sahib, replacing incumbent party MP Jasbir Singh Gill (Dimpa), is a former MLA (2017-2022) from Zira assembly segment of the parliamentary constituency. However, he lost badly in the 2022 assembly elections, finishing third behind the AAP, which swept the polls, and the SAD.

He will face a formidable challenge from cabinet minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of AAP and senior SAD leader and two-time MLA – from Valtoha and Khem Karan – Virsa Singh Valtoha. The BJP has fielded its Amritsar District (Rural) President Manjit Singh ‘Manna’ Mianwind, who has been a three-time MLA during his earlier innings with the SAD.

Congress’ First List Of 8 Candidates For Haryana Fails To Impress

0
Kumari Selja to contest LS 2024 elections from Sirsa (SC) constituency as Congress candidate
Apart from Kumari Sejla from Sirsa (SC) and Deepender Hooda (Rohtak), others do not inspire much confidence

After seemingly endless deliberations over choice of candidates for nine of the 10 lok sabha seats in Haryana being contested by the Congress in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the first list of eight candidates released by the party high command late on Thursday (25.04.2024) clearly stamps the dominance of party heavyweight from the state Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Barring former Union minister and four time Lok Sabha member Kumari Selja, all the other candidates are considered to be from the Hooda camp. Selja herself has not been fielded from the constituency of her choice, which was Ambala (SC), but from Sirsa (SC) seat. She has represented both seats twice each in the Lok Sabha.

Varun Chaudhary is Congress candidate from Ambala (SC) seat

From Ambala (SC) seat, the party has bet its money on a young face, sitting Mulana (SC) MLA Varun Chaudhary, son of former long standing state party chief and Haryana minister Phool Chand Mulana.

Rao Dan Singh to contest from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh seat

For the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh seat, which has been dominated for decades by Haryana stalwart Bansi Lal’s family, the party has denied the ticket to Bansi Lal’s paternal granddaughter and former MP from the seat Shruti Chaudhary. It has preferred four times, and also sitting MLA from Mahendragarh Rao Dan Singh.

After making a giant kill in her first lok sabha elections in 2009 from the seat, when she defeated prominent Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Ajay Chautala, Shruti Chaudhary lost to BJP’s Dharambir Singh in 2014 and 2019 by big margins. BJP has once again reposed faith in Dharambir Singh from the seat.

Deepender Hooda again pitched against Arvind Kumar Sharma of the BJP from Rohtak LS seat

Congress has again pitched the only party Rajya Sabha member from the state and Hooda’s son Deepender Singh Hooda against BJP’s incumbent MP Arvind Kumar Sharma from Rohtak seat. Deepender, who won the seat thrice since 2005, lost narrowly to Arvind Kumar Sharma in the 2019 elections, when the BJP swept all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Jai Prakash it is from Hisar

Brijendra Singh, incumbent BJP MP from Hisar, who recently resigned from the party and joined the Congress, was widely believed to get the party ticket to contest the seat again, but instead the party decided to go with Jai Prakash, former three-time MP from the seat (1989-Janata Dal, 1996-Haryana Vikas Party of Bansi Lal, 2004-Congress) and former Union deputy minister in Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar ministry.

Incidentally in his latest attempt at contesting elections, Jai Prakash could not even win an assembly byelection. He lost the 2022 byelections to the Adampur assembly segment of the Hisar parliamentary constituency to rookie BJP candidate Bhavya Bishnoi, son of then incumbent MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi, who quit the Congress and the seat to join the BJP.

Punjabi vs Punjabi: Haryana Youth Congress president Divyanshu Budhiraja is the party candidate against former chief minister Mahohar Lal of the BJP from Karnal

Springing a surprise, the Congress has played a gamble, pitching a young rookie Divyanshu Budhiraja (31) against former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal of teh BJP, who quit the post to contest the Lok Sabha elections from his home turf Karnal. He represented Karnal as MLA when he was chief minister. In fielding Budhiraja, who is state youth Congress president, from Karnal, the party has tried to match Manohar Lal, who belongs to the Punjabi community, with a candidate from the same community.

Satyapal Brahamchari is the surpirse Congress candidate from Sonipat

Another surprise is the party candidate named to contest from Sonipat, from where Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who belongs to the Jat community, had suffered a shock defeat in 2019 at the hands of Ramesh Chander Kaushik of the BJP, who hails from the Brahmin community.

The party this time has shown faith in a Brahmin, Satpal Brahamchari, who manages multiple dharamshalas, ashrams and temples in Haryana, and in Haridwar, and lost his first big elections as a Congress candidate from Haridwar assembly seat in 2022.

Mahendra Pratap returns to active electoral politics as Congress candidate from Faridabad

Former two-time Haryana cabinet minister and five-time MLA Mahendra Pratap is making a comeback in electoral politics, having been given the party ticket to contest from Faridabad.

The party has reserved its decision on fielding a candidate from Gurgaon.

Under the INDIA alliance, Congress has left the Kurukshetra seat to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has already announced state party president and its former Rajya Sabha member Sushil Gupta as its party candidate.

In announcing the first list of party candidates from Haryana, Congress, which commands a considerable Jat vote bank in the state, has tried to counter the BJP’s attempts at consolidating the non-Jat votes.

Apart from naming two jats – Deepender Singh Hooda from Rohtak and Jai Prakash from Hisar, and dalits to the two reserved seats – Kumari Selja from Sirsa and Varun Chaudhary from Ambala, the party has taken care to accommodate a Brahmin – Satpal Brahmchari from Sonipat, a Punjabi – Divyanshu Budhiraja from Karnal, and two members from the other backward classes (OBCs) – Rao Dan Singh from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh and Mahendra Pratap from Faridabad.

Polling to the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be held in the sixth and penultimate phase of the elections on May 25. The final phase will be held on June 1 and counting for all seven phases of the elections will start on June 4.

SC Rejects Pleas For 100% Verification Of EVM Votes With VVPAT slips

However, two directives issued to allay the apprehension of candidates and strengthen the existing mechanism

The Supreme Court of India on Friday (26.04.2024) dismissed a clutch of petitions seeking the complete cross-verification of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) votes with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). It also rejected pleas for return to the ballot paper system for elections.

A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, delivering separate but concurring judgment, said that the court had elaborately discussed the protocols and technical aspects before rejecting the request for 100 per cent verification of EVM votes with VVPAT slips. Expressing confidence in the current electoral mechanisms, the bench emphasised that mere suspicion is not enough to question a system pivotal to the democratic process of the world’s largest democracy.

However, it observed that “One suggestion which can be examined by the Election Commission of India would be whether there can be electronic machines for counting paper slips and whether there can be a bar code along with the symbols as regards which party.”

The court issued two directives to allay the apprehension of the candidates in the fray and strengthen the existing mechanism.

It said that the containers carrying the symbol loading unit should be sealed in the presence of the candidates or their polling agents and be kept secured for 45 days – the period for which the control unit, ballot unit, and VVPATs candidates are preserved for enabling candidates to file election petitions against the poll result.

Second, the court ordered that if any candidate files a written complaint within seven days of the poll results, casting doubt on the process’s dependability, the control unit, ballot unit, and VVPATs would be examined by the engineers of the EVM manufacturing companies following the results announcement.

During the hearing, Justice Datta said that while maintaining a balanced perspective is crucial in evaluating systems or institutions, blindly distrusting any aspect of the system can breed unwarranted scepticism and impede progress.

The petitions filed by the non-profit Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and activist Arun Kumar Agarwal had sought a more comprehensive approach to casting and counting of votes.

Agarwal advocated the counting of all VVPAT slips to ensure transparency. ADR’s petition focussed on enabling voters to confirm that their votes are accounted for as they are cast. The petitions also sought that voters be permitted to physically deposit their VVPAT slips in ballot boxes.
