Down In The Pits From Cloud Nine, That Sinking Feeling!

From ICC T20 World Cup high to Test low, Rohit hits both extremities in 2024
Kiwis make history handing India their first ever 3-0 whitewash in a home Test Series of three or more matches in 90 years, ever since India started playing Test matches in Dec 1933
Hosts also lose their top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) table, slipping to 58.33 percentage points behind Australia’s 62.50
Need to work hard to lift their game and morale for the 5-Test away series in Australia if they are to remain in contention for their third straight WTC final
Both Rohit and Kohli will be under pressure to perform Down Under, and so will be Chief Coach Gautam Gambhir to show results
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins November 22 in Perth

The Indian cricket fans were left aghast after witnessing their national heroes crash to their most embarrassing home Test Series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand in the history of Indian Test cricket.

The narrow 25-run loss in the third and final Test match in Mumbai on Sunday, after crushing defeats in Bangalore and Pune, meant that India for the first time in the history of modern cricket suffered a 3-0 whitewash (lost all matches of a series with no matches being drawn or abandoned) in a home Test series of three or more matches.

There could not have been a sweeter redemption for the Kiwis, who came to India straight from their own 2-0 whitewash in a Test series against hosts Sri Lanka. This was undoubtedly the Kiwis’ greatest ever series win away from home, hailed as such by their Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Acknowledging the enormity of the historic series loss, Indian captain Rohit Sharma described it as a ‘low point’ of his cricketing career, something which he admitted is going to hurt for a long time.

The 3-0 Test series loss also meant that India lost their top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 table, slipping to 58.33 percentage points, behind new table topper Australia’s 62.50.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy looms
There is no time to lose as India embark on a highly challenging tour of Australia in just a couple of weeks. The five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins November 22 in Perth.

Chief coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma have their task cut out. The team needs to practice hard and concentrate on rectifying the mistakes identified. Most importantly, they ought to put the embarrassing loss behind them and lift their game and morale to standards they have defined over the past few years.

Having suffered two consecutive series losses at home against India, the Aussies are known to be preparing hard to extract revenge. India on their part should go into the series with a winning mindset. Losing the series is not an option if they are to remain in contention for entering their third successive WTC final. The third edition of WTC final is scheduled to be played in Lord’s, London, from June 11 to 15 next year.

Having massively underperformed in the longest format of the game in the recent past, more noticeably in the latest series against New Zealand, it is high time for top guns Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to prove on the ground that they can still provide solidity at the top of the order and inspire the highly talented younger lot to consolidate the innings.

In the three Tests against the Kiwis, Rohit has scored just 94 runs, with a highest score of 52 in the second innings of the first Test in Bengaluru. In Tests at home this season, he has managed 133 runs in 10 innings at an abysmal average of 13.30. Kohli has scored 192 runs with one fifty (innings of 70 runs) in 10 innings at a dismal average of 21.33.

This despite the hosts getting tailor-made pitches prepared apparently with the aim of making them work to their advantage.

For the records
This is the first-time ever New Zealand have won three Tests in a series, home or away, and first time ever they have won three successive away Tests

They became the fourth side to whitewash India in a series of three-plus Tests, away or at home, after England (4 times), Australia (3) and West Indies (1)

Before the Mumbai Test, India had already lost a home Test series for the first time since 2012. But the defeat in Mumbai made things go from bad to worse with the first ever home Test Series whitewash in a series of three of more matches

India have played 294 Tests at home, starting from the first home Test appearance at the Bombay Gymkhana Ground, and their 58th defeat came against New Zealand, when the visitors won the third Test match

The only other instance of India being whitewashed at home in a series comprising at least two games was against South Africa, which the Proteas won 2-0 in 2000

Cricket/sports statistician Mohandas Menon posted on his X account that India has been blanked 3-0 at home twice before by West Indies but both times the Test series were of higher number of matches – five Tests in 1958/59 and six Tests in 1983/84

He shared that most Test wickets at Wankhede Stadium by a Mumbai-born bowler have been 25 by New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel and 17 by Ravi Shastri. The 36 years old Kiwi left-arm spinner was also born in Mumbai, before his family migrated to New Zealand when he was very young

He also shared that the most Test wickets at an Indian venue by visiting bowlers have been 25 by Ajaz Patel of New Zealand (at Wankhede), 22 by Ian Botham of England (at Wankhede), and 18 by Richie Benaud of Australia (at Kolkata)

Ajaz’s fingers spin magic in birthplace Mumbai
Born in Mumbai, 36 years old Ajaz Patel appears to take naturally to the Wankhede Stadium in the city of his birth. His fingers have spun magic here. In December 2021, Ajaz had made headlines by becoming just the third bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in a single innings. He finished with a match haul of 14 wickets for 225 runs, setting a record for the best figures by a visiting bowler in India.

His six for 57 bowling analysis in the second Indian innings on the third day of the just concluded Mumbai Test match for a match haul of 11 wickets, was, however, apparently sweeter than the Perfect 10 he achieved here three years ago since this one emerged as a winning performance for his team in a historic moment.

Another day, another Indian collapse
Chasing a paltry 147 for a consolation win on a tricky spinning wicket, the Indian batting line-up collapsed once again on the third day of the third and final Test match against New Zealand with the sole exception of wicketkeeper batsman Rishab Pant, who displayed remarkable resilience against the rampaging spin duo of Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips and unleashed a range of his trademark shots.

The figures shared by statistician Mohandas Menon on his X account say it all.

Highest run-getters for India in the second innings at Mumbai

64 – Rishab Pant
12 – Washington Sundar
12 – Byes
11 – Rohit Sharma

Noida International Airport Ph 1 On Course To Start Full Scale Ops From April 2025

Second stage trials to begin from November 15
Expected to take load off IGI Airport, which is 70 kms away

The Noida International Airport at Jewar, the second international airport in National Capital Region (NCR) Delhi, appears on course to begin full scale commercial operations from the revised schedule of mid-April 2025 (initial deadline was September 2024). Work on the runway and air traffic control tower is nearing completion and construction is proceeding at a frenetic pace to get the terminal building and other infrastructure ready for the first phase of the project.

The second stage of trial operations are set to begin from November 15, with domestic flights of some airlines, including Akasa and Indigo, taking off from the airport and landing back daily for a month, till December 15.

Arun Vir Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), has been reported in the media as saying that after the monthlong second stage trials, the required data will be uploaded on the website of the Director General of Civil Aviation
(DGCA) before applying for aerodrome license, which is expected to be granted well in time for the full scale commercial operations from the airport to begin from April 17, 2025.

The authorities are expected to run 30 flights on the opening day – 25 domestic, three international flights, likely for Zurich, Singapore and Dubai, and two cargo flights.

The first stage of trial operations was completed with DGCA approving the airport’s flight calibrations after scrutinising reports relating to the runway, wind speed, etc.

NIAL is understood to have already signed memoranda of understanding for running flights with Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa airlines and talks are underway with other international airlines.

The cities in the domestic circuit which will initially be connected to Noida are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks and months.

Tatas To Enter Ultra-Fast Delivery Space With Neu Flash

The super success of 10-20 minutes quick ecommerce delivery platforms like Zomato-owned Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto, which together command over 85% market share in the segment, is egging other major ecommerce players to follow suit.

The latest entrant would be the Tata group’s ecommerce venture Neu. According to a report in Economic Times, quoting undisclosed sources in the know of the development, Neu looks set to enter the segment as ‘Neu Flash’. Initially the service could be rolled out to select users in the coming weeks, selling grocery, electronics and fashion, gradually expanding to more users.

Other recent entrants have been Flipkart with its service named Minutes, while Reliance JioMart is testing the service again after having shut its 90-minute delivery under JioMart Express, the report said.

The report, attributing its information to several brokerages, mentioned that market leader in the quick commerce segment Blinkit has around 40% share. Zepto, riding on its recent massive success in raising funding, has emerged as its serious challenger.

The report further said quick commerce is disrupting ecommerce and other forms of retail, which is partly the reason why other consumer platforms are readying to deliver a wide range of goods beyond grocery in 10-20 minutes.

For grocery, Neu Flash will be powered by BigBasket, while Croma will be selling electronics and phones and Tata Cliq fashion and lifestyle products through the quick commerce platform, the report added.

RERA Punjab Secy Urges Real Estate Developers To Have Own Grievance Cells

RERA Punjab Secretary Charan Dev Singh Maan has a word of practical advice for the real estate developers in the state to limit the additional burden of heavy penalties being imposed on them by the regulator – set up your own dedicated customer grievance redressal cells and resolve issues at your own end.

Addressing the inaugural session of the 2nd edition of RealEstate360, organized by CII Chandigarh & the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) at the CII Northern Region headquarters in Chandigarh on Thursday, he said though buyer/investor confidence had generally increased ever since the inception of RERA in Punjab, still all is not well with the real estate sector and there are 1700 complaints pending with the regulator.

Pointing out that nearly 95% of the complaints pertained to delayed possession of flats/apartments, apart from other issues like poor quality of construction, deficiency in services, etc, he called for greater indulgence by the promoters/developers to ensure that the licences, permissions, NOCs, etc are received in time and the deadlines for various compliances are strictly adhered to, instead of depending solely on their teams.

While admitting that the promoters/developers faced various challenges in executing their projects, he informed that due to intervention of RERA Punjab, the state government has issued various notifications to ensure that the licences, permissions and NOCs etc, are issued within 60 days.

Regarding validity of provisional completion certificates also, he said the state government has extended its validity to three years, with a provision to further extend it by another two years.

Mentioning steps taken to ensure that development of illegal colonies is discouraged he said there are 1578 real estate projects registered with RERA Punjab, out of which 878 (more than 50%) are in Mohali alone. In comparison there are 14,000 unregistered colonies. In this regard, the recent state government order by which registry of a residential unit has been barred without a RERA No. is a positive development, he added.

He informed that in near future RERA Punjab will have a monitoring cell of its own to curb such illegal activities.

In his address via virtual mode, Kalyan Chakrabarti, CEO, Emaar Ltd, also cautioned real estate developers against ignoring the customer because eventually any developer’s long-term survival and growth depends on him.

Stressing that a modern-day customer and other stakeholders are much more aware, vigilant and demanding, he advised developers against cutting corners and to strictly adhere to timelines for various compliances.

Noting that the economy is growing, and so are incomes, fuelled by conducive policies, he nonetheless spelled a few points to look out for, including possible supply side challenges in view of demand increasing at a faster rate and engaging good quality contractors with skilled labour to ensure efficient delivery.

Adding a note of caution, Chakrabarti said good times are not going to last forever, so developers should not get carried away with the current positive scenario and go for overkill without conducting proper risk assessment.

Emphasising the advantages of maintaining longevity of a developer’s core team, he at the same time asserted that non-performance should not be condoned.

Earlier, setting the context for the event, Ashwinder R Singh, Co-Chairman, CII NR Committee on Real Estate, and Vice Chairman & CEO, BCD Group, who also joined via virtual mode, remarked that Indian real estate is entering an exciting new phase of growth, driven by urbanization, infrastructure development, and evolving consumer preferences. The Tri-City and Punjab region, with Chandigarh at its core, is emerging as a dynamic real estate hub, offering immense potential for residential, commercial, and industrial investments.

Describing the current scenario as the “Amrit kaal of real estate”, he informed that for the first time the growth of the luxury segment (above Rs 1 cr/unit) has outpaced the growth in the affordable segment (up to Rs 60 lakh).

Pointing out that 20-25% of the home buyers in Punjab continue to be NRIs, he called for nurturing this segment of buyers even more for further growth.

Though admitting that the real estate scene in Punjab has not grown as fast as in some of the other high-growth states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka, or Delhi NCR, he said the region has immense potential, which will get unlocked once the much-awaited Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor is opened.

The warehousing segment has already shown a remarkable upswing in Punjab, almost doubling between 2022-24, largely fuelled by galloping e-commerce activity.

Attributing the around 10% growth in the real estate sector in the state to three factors -NRIs, first time home buyers and shift in preference from independent homes to apartments especially among the elderly for safer environment – he said a lot of people are also upgrading from 2 BHK to 3BHK residential units especially after the pandemic.

Emphasising that real estate continues to be a great asset to have in the long run, he expressed confidence that it will give good returns in a 4–5-year timeline.

While anchoring the inaugural session, Amarbir Singh, Past Chairman, CII Chandigarh UT & MD, Indian Polymer Industries, reiterated CII Chandigarh’s advocacy of including key areas like Zirakpur, Kharar and Derabassi under a Greater Chandigarh Region, arguing that it has tremendous growth potential.

Stories Of Valour & Camaraderie At 4 Rajput Battalion Veterans’ Meet

They had several stories of bravery, valour, sacrifice and camaraderie to relate as a few dozen veterans of the highly decorated 4th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, one of the oldest Indian infantry regiments, from different parts of the country gathered in Mohali on Friday at the initiative of host Col (retd) Ranbir Singh, Vir Chakra (VrC), and his wife Jasjit Kang.

The veterans, including ex-officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and
non-commissioned officers (NCOs), some with their wives, are here for what is being described as a four-day gala get-together to commemorate the Zojila Battle Honour Day in advance of the annual celebrations on November 16 due to the battalion’s deployment in the field.

Apparently mighty pleased with the gathering at his residence in Sector 69 Mohali, Col Ranbir Singh, into his 84th year, shared with your own news portal LifeInChandigarh.com: “My wife and I were seized with a compelling desire to organize a gala gathering of 4 Rajput veterans of all ranks at Mohali. I’m happy to note that the response from my old comrades has been overwhelming, with some of them despite their advanced age making it possible to come all the way from Cochin, Bangalore and Jaipur.”

The spirit of camaraderie was all pervasive as veterans of the 4th Rajput Battalion, some accompanied by their spouses, reunited to fondly reminisce about their days of service in the challenging conditions of war and in peace. The battalion’s current Commanding Officer (CO) Col Sandeep Singh, Sena Medal (SM) was also present along with representation of unit JCOs and NCOs.

Some of the decorated veterans proudly related the valour and determination showed by the battalion especially in the lesser publicly known Kargil battle of May 1965 (not the famous Kargil war of 1999) in which platoon sized units raided and captured the highest feature (Point 16320) overlooking Kargil town and the Kashmir-Leh highway, which was illegally captured by Pakistan Army in 1947-48, after a bloody close quarter combat, in which the enemy held advantageous heights.

The raiding party suffered heavy casualties, including its Commanding Officer Major Baljit Singh Randhawa, who continued to direct his men despite being grievously injured in the chest. He was decorated with the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously. The statue of Maj Randhawa at the feature stands testament to his bravery.

Col (retd) Ranbir Singh, then a Captain, was among the wounded along with Capt (retd) VK Agarwal, then a 2nd Lieutenant. Then Captain Ranbir Singh was awarded the Vir Chakra.

In the 1971 Eastern War (Bangladesh war), the battalion was tasked with neutralising a Pakistani artillery position at Chandipur, 10 kms behind enemy lines, which was proving a hurdle in the advance of Indian troops. The advancing Indian troops had to wade through the Giri river in the absence of a bridge.

As they moved along both sides of the road approaching the artillery gun position, the precise location of which was not known to the raiding party, they were taken completely by surprise as they came under heavy direct fire from the artillery gun (called ground roll direct fire) which is normally used as a long-range weapon with its shell following a parabolic trajectory.

Still the Indian troops kept bravely moving forward despite the heavy fire from the artillery gun, in conjunction with mortar and medium machine gun fire, inflicting casualties on them. Eventually the troops were ordered to withdraw but the mission was accomplished as the enemy sensing a threat of encirclement, completely withdrew from the area.

Col (retd) D S Rajput, Captain then, was grievously wounded and was awarded the Vir Chakra for bravery. Honorary Capt (retd) Ram Singh, 90, then Naib Subedar, earned the Sena Medal.

Major General (retd) MC Nanjappa was awarded the Mentioned-in-Dispatches for his valour in the 1971 Eastern War.

Later he went on to receive the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) for his unit command during Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) operations in Sri Lanka. He was awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) twice, once as Brigadier and later as Major General.

4 Rajput Battalion’s history

The unit boasts a rich legacy of valour and sacrifices of its forefathers. It is one of few units which participated in World Wars I, II. It took part in 22 overseas campaigns from 1845 to 1946, winning accolades while fighting battles in Persia, Aden, Macedonia, Tigris, Al-Alamein and Burma.

Post independence, the unit fought in 1948 J&K operations, 1965 and 1971 Indo- Pak wars, Gaza Strip 1960/61, Goa liberation 1961, Indo-China war 1962, IPKF Operations in Sri Lanka in 1988/90.

Called the “Fighting Fourth”, 4 Rajput Battalion swears by its motto, “Sarvatra Vijaya”.

Four generations of military service

Col (retd) Ranbir Singh has authored a book ‘Creed of Valour and Sacrifice’ documenting his family’s 120 years of four-generations service to the Indian Army.

The tryst of the Kang family with the Indian Army began when Risaldar Narain Singh, Col Ranbir Singh’s grandfather, joined the 6th Bengal Cavalry (now 18 Cavalry) as a ‘sowar’ in 1869.

Narain Singh’s son Brig Sukhdev Singh, Vir Chakra (VrC) in 1948 Zojila Pass operation in J&K, Military Cross (MC) in WWII, carried forward the second-generation banner. After this, Brig Sukhdev’s three sons – Capt Bharpur Singh Kang (later DIG), Col Jasbir Singh Kang and Col Ranbir Singh – served as third generation flag-bearers. Capt Bharpur Singh’s son Karminder Singh Kang, the fourth generation in the Indian Army, was killed in action in Sri Lanka in 1989.

The Kang family has the distinction of having fought in Northwest Frontier Province in 1897 and early 1940s, WWII in Burma against the Japanese from 1942-46, the 1947-48 war with Pakistan in J&K, 1965 and 1971 war with Pakistan and IPKF Operations in Sri Lanka.

The book is also a tribute to all those who have been serving the nation in uniform generation after generation.

Miracle! Russian Man Adrift In Icy Sea For 67 Days, Rescued By ‘Angel’

It’s a miracle, and the remarkable resilience of a Russian man who survived 67 days adrift in icy seas on a small inflatable boat, the engine of which failed, while whale-watching in the Sea of Okhotsk, the coldest sea in East Asia known for its gales.

A fishing vessel, called Angel, proved as such for the man as it spotted the boat this week (on Oct 14) and the fishermen rescued 46-year-old Mikhail Pichugin about 11 nautical miles off Kamchatka and about 540 nautical miles from its departure point.

According to Russian media, when the crew of the fishing vessel spotted the tiny inflatable boat on their radar, they initially thought it was a buoy or a piece of junk, but when they turned on the spotlight to make sure, they were shocked to see Pichugin waving and shouting at them for help.

Doctors attending on Pichugin have said he is suffering from dehydration and hypothermia but is in stable condition.

Sharing details, the news reports said Pichugin had set off to watch whales with his 49-year-old brother and 15-year-old nephew, but the boat’s engine shut down on way back on August 9 and subsequently one of the oars also broke rendering the boat uncontrollable. The only communication device which works in the Sea of Okhotsk is a satellite phone, which the family did not have.

After being reported missing, emergency services made efforts to locate the trio but failed. Pichugin’s brother and nephew later died, and he tied their bodies to the boat to prevent them from being washed away.

Relating his harrowing experience from his hospital bed, Pichugin said after the drinking water and rations on board exhausted, they tried to collect rainwater and catch some fish. To overcome the shivering cold, they took turns to get into a sleeping bag with camel wool which got wet and did not dry.

Pichugin comes from Ulan-Ude in Siberia but working on the far eastern island of Sakhalin as a driver.

Bajaj Launches World’s First Bi-Fuel CNG-Petrol Bike Freedom 125 In Chandigarh

In one fill of 2 kg CNG and 2 litre petrol the 125cc bike gives a combined range of 330 kms
Company claims that the bike is both greener and lowers operating costs by up to 50%
Bike claimed to be completely safe with over a dozen stringent safety and crash tests done
CNG tank compactly packed in a trellis chassis for maximum safety
Available in three variants and five colours, price starting from ex-showroom Rs 95,000

Two-wheeler automobile major Bajaj Auto, boasting a history of innovation, has achieved another first. It has come out with the world’s first bi-fuel CNG-petrol 125 cc bike, Freedom 125, which it claims is both greener and lowers operating costs by up to 50% as compared to similar internal combustion (IC) engine bikes.

And it is claimed to be perfectly safe, with the company maintaining that it has conducted more than a dozen rigorous safety and crash tests before bringing the bike into the market.

Priced ex-showroom starting at Rs 95,000, offering three variants and five colour options, the bike was inaugurated in the Chandigarh dealership of the company recently by UT Chandigarh Director Environment TC Nautiyal.

The dealership delivered 16 bikes to customers on the day of the inaugural.

Company officials claim that according to a survey over 75% of 2- wheeler customers rate fuel efficiency as a key attribute, and Freedom 125 addresses that perfectly. It also aligns with the Government of India’s push for building a nationwide CNG network, driven by the need to use cleaner fuels and save foreign exchange, they add.

The CNG tank and kit, compactly packed in a trellis chassis for maximum safety, provides a range of 200+ km on just 2 kg of CNG fuel. The additional 2-liter petrol tank extends the range by over 130 km in case the CNG tank empties, giving a combined range of 330 kms.

The transition from CNG to petrol is near seamless with just flick of a switch with a relaxed throttle.

While packaging a CNG tank and kit, as well as the small petrol tank, in a compact vehicle like a bike was extremely challenging, the company through its innovations has been successful in achieving that without compromising on the aesthetics. While the small petrol tank remains at its traditional place, the elongated CNG cylinder has been placed under an extralong flat seat, with separate side-by-side inlets for filling up the bi-fuels.
