Neuronavigation uses a computer-assisted system that provides surgeons real-time and three-dimensional guidance during brain and spine surgeries akin to a GPS. It uses pre-operative medical imaging like MRI and CT scans to help surgeons with greater accuracy in locating and removing tumours, placing screw, or performing biopsies.
It also helps surgeons precisely locate important structures, plan the safest path, and accurately track their instruments to minimize damage to healthy tissue. This enhances surgical accuracy, safety, and efficacy, enabling procedures on deep-seated lesions and supporting minimally invasive techniques.

Briefing media persons about the landmark achievement, Dr Vineet Saggar, Director – Neuro & Spine Surgery, and Dr Ajay Singh, Consultant – Neurosurgery, Livasa Hospital Mohali, explained how neuro-navigation works and why it has become an essential tool for modern neurosurgical practice.
They said unlike in conventional surgery in which the incision in the skull and brain is much bigger, in neuronavigation it is significantly smaller. Post-operation, the patient is usually discharged in a day or two, unlike in conventional surgery where the hospitalisation extends up to 10-12 days post-surgery.

The doctors asserted that this way the neuronavigation method, apart from being minimally invasive, more accurate, and safer with reduced collateral damage to healthy tissues, also proves less expensive, because every additional day of hospitalisation adds to the bill. The overall package of neuronavigation surgery comes to around Rs 3-4 lakh against Rs 10-12 lakh in case of conventional neurosurgery, they added.
