Offers limited period robotic charges-free joint replacement, resurfacing packages

With a first of its kind ultra-modern robotic suite of three different robotic joint replacement and resurfacing technologies and machines, Park Grecian Hospital Mohali has become the first healthcare facility in the entire region to make precise and accurate robot-assisted joint surgeries accessible and affordable to all sections of society.

The Robotic Arthroplasty Centre of Excellence was unveiled at a press conference held in the hospital premises on Thursday with a limited period offer of robot-assisted surgeries being performed at no additional charge over the normal package rates for joint replacement and resurfacing during the period of the ‘Park Mahotsav’ being celebrated from February 15 to March 31, 2025. During this period, the hospital has estimated that it might be able to accommodate 100-150 patients on a first come first served basis.

In an exclusive conversation with your own news portal LifeInChandigarh.com, on the sidelines of the press conference, well known joint replacement surgeon of the region Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh Saluja, Chairman & Director – Robotic Arthroplasty Centre of Excellence, Park Grecian Hospital Mohali, who has performed 25,000+ joint transplant surgeries in his practice spanning over 20 years, said these latest robot-assisted surgeries will prove a boon for patients.

Apart from delivering unprecedented precision, efficiency and superior patient outcomes, these cutting-edge technologies will make joint replacement and resurfacing faster, safer and more effective than ever before.

Listing out the advantages of these latest joint replacement and resurfacing robot-assisted technologies in comparison to earlier technologies, he said the incision size will get reduced from the current 10-12 inches to just 4-4.5 inches.

He shared that earlier, surgeries used to cause collateral damage to muscle mass around the joint resulting in muscle power being reduced to practically nil and requiring months of physiotherapy for rehabilitation, apart from having to bear excruciating pain. With the new technologies, there is no damage to the muscle mass and hence little pain.

Another advantage, Dr Saluja said, is that earlier the entire joint was removed, but now the extent of the damaged portion of the joint can be accurately ascertained and only that portion is replaced. So, in that case the joint is not replaced, it is resurfaced, he explained.

He further said that the new robot-assisted surgery does away with the need for screwing an alignment rod to the bones adjoining the joint because of which patients ran the risk of bone damage.

Still another plus point of the new technology, Dr Saluja said, is that the size of the joint to be replaced can be more accurately measured as compared to the previous mechanical method, which results in exact joint replacement for better patient outcomes.

The surgery time with the robot-assisted joint replacement or resurfacing has been cut down to a mere 10-12 minutes with no need for stitches and inserting catheters, which can cause infections. The post-surgery need for keeping a patient in ICU for 48 to 72 hours has also been done away with.

Patients will start walking within four hours, regain independence in two days and resume pain-free lives in just days, Dr Saluja promised.

The Robotic Arthroplasty Centre of Excellence will specialise in:

• Robotic hip and knee replacements
• Complex revision surgeries
• Sports medicine and arthroscopy
• Shoulder, elbow, and ankle joint replacements or resurfacing, and orthopaedics & trauma care

However, Dr Saluja was quick to clarify that his long experience with replacement surgeries has shown that robotic surgeries may not be the right recourse in 100% of the cases. Advanced age and bone health are among the determining factors for the surgeon to decide whether to opt for robotic surgery or not, he added.
