Showbizz To Ride Piggyback On Admn

0

The Golden is so very precious in our lives, whether it be birth, wedding or any other anniversary. The Chandigarh Union Territory Administration did not think alike, when it allowed its 50 years of existence to go by without much ado. But, surprisingly, now it has partnered a non-government entity, allowing it a piggyback ride to celebrate “Establishment Day”, a five day grand extravaganza to mark the 51st year of the City Beautiful from November 1 to 5, 2017.

What came out in the press conference organised by the private entity, Showbizz Celebrations Pvt. Ltd., where Chandigarh Tourism Director Jitender Yadav unveiled the official logo of the festival, was that the UT Administration will allow its platforms, including venues etc, to be used by Showbizz, which for all practical purposes will be the organiser of the event.

According to a statement shared at the press conference, the Chandigarh Administration is an associate partner with Showbizz for the event, which is being held “to connect the youth of the city with its rich history of success and development.”

The statement, quoting Manmeet Singh and Narbir Singh, both Directors of Showbizz Celebrations Pvt Ltd., said the five day festival to be held at Parade Ground in Sector 17, will feature Chandigarh icon awards, a picture gallery showcasing the historical legacy of the city, a food festival with special showcase by Ashish Chopra (a culinary historian, author and television host), rallies of vintage and luxury cars, a luxury lifestyle exhibition, a real estate expo and a fashion show with a Bollywood showstopper. There will be a carnival for kids’ entertainment and an elderly women’s marathon. Gurdas Mann will lead a line up of artists to add to the entertainment quotient. A special song on Chandigarh is also being prepared, they said.

Will it be a routine expo, or a memorable event, as the organisers are claiming it will be, we’ll know, come November 1.

Patar To Head Punjab Kala Parishad

0

In its push to revive the rich art and culture of Punjab, the state government has appointed celebrated Punjabi writer and poet Dr Surjit Pattar as Chairman of the Punjab Kala Parishad. His nomination was made by Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh and Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu presented the appointment letter to Dr Patar in Ludhiana on Tuesday.

He replaces another popular Punjabi artist Satinder Satti, whose appointment towards the fag end of the tenure of the previous Akali Dal-BJP government had raised many eyebrows.

In his thanksgiving words, Dr. Patar promised to launch a people’s movement to propagate Punjabi culture, folk arts and literature.

Speaking on the occasion, Navjot Singh Sidhu reiterated the state government’s resolve to constitute a ‘Cultural Parliament’ soon to initiate meaningful and constructive deliberations leading to strategies aimed at popularizing Punjabi art and culture. Modern tools of communication, including internet and social media, would be liberally used to ensure faster penetration into every household in Punjab, he added.

Member of Parliament from Ludhiana Ravneet Bittu was among several dignitaries present.

Another Kiran Bedi Comes To Town?

0

There may be a lot for the female folk to cheer about with Nilambari Jagadale on Tuesday taking over as the first woman Senior Superintendent of Police of UT Chandigarh. But law breakers and criminals beware, she comes with the image of a no nonsense hard boiled policewoman.

In her first media interaction on taking charge, Nilambari, who has headed the police force in three districts of Punjab, two of them being sensitive border districts of Fazilka and Pathankot, came across as a balanced professional police officer, becoming empathetic and sympathetic, and ruthless as the situation demands.

PHOTOS BY: LIFE IN CHANDIGARH

Her inclination to interact and seek suggestions from the public, including the media, to further improve policing in the union territory could bode well for the Chandigarh folks menaced by intolerable levels of street crime and violence.

Nilambari, an engineering graduate, who worked in a multinational corporation (MNC) for two years before joining the IPS, appeared keen on revisiting some community policing initiatives taken in Chandigarh in the past and adding her own inputs to make the Chandigarh Police more people friendly.

She feels that for a professional police officer the challenges are the same whether you are a man or a woman. So long as you are fair and professional in your approach you will be respected by the force as well as the public at large, she asserted.

Having Kiran Bedi, the first Indian IPS officer, and the only woman Inspector General of Chandigarh Police so far, as her role model, Nilambari has a chance to prove her mettle in a bigger arena which is Chandigarh, joint capital of two states.

Remember the days when Kiran Bedi used to roam the streets incognito at night keeping a watchful eye on her force, for which she was appreciated and loved by the Chandigarh populace. It’s an example worth emulating.

We wish her Good Luck & All The Best!!

Pkl Admn Unearths Sex Determination Tests Racket In Punjab

0

What do you make of this – a crime happening in your backyard and an outside agency gets wind of it and does a decoy act to unearth it. This is exactly what happened when a team of the Haryana Health Department from Panchkula went all the way to Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab to unearth an alleged illegal sex determination tests racket being run from a private hospital there.

Giving details of the raid conducted in Punjab, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Gauri Prashar Joshi said in a media release that acting on a tip-off, a team deputed by the Panchkula District Administration sent a decoy customer to Mahesh Hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib after establishing coordination with Deputy Commissioner and Chief Medical Officer of Fatehgarh Sahib district.

The team then carried out a raid after the hospital staff conducted the illegal sex determination test and caught the accused red-handed in the act with the amount paid by the decoy customer for the test. Cash amounting to Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 was recovered from the doctor and tout, respectively. During the raid, it also came to light that the clinic was not registered.

Gauri Prashar said on the complaint of the team, an FIR was being registered against the doctor, a helper and two touts. Further investigation was underway, she added.

Gets 2 More Advanced Centres, Satellite Centre For Una

The prestigious Post Graduate Institute for Medical Education and Research (PGIMER, PGI for short) Chandigarh got its last advanced super speciality centre – Advanced Cardiac Centre – in 2009. Since then, it has been starved of a major project. The wait is finally over – not one, but two advanced super speciality centres have been sanctioned for the institute along with a satellite centre at Una in Himachal Pradesh with a total outlay of Rs 1475 crore.

All three projects –  Advanced Mother and Child Centre (Rs 485 crores),  Advanced Neurosciences Centre (Rs 495.31 crores) and Satellite Centre at Una in HP (Rs 495 crores) on the pattern of the Satellite Centre at Sangrur in Punjab were approved at a meeting of the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India, held in New Delhi. Among others the meeting was attended by the representatives of NITI Aayog and Ministry of Finance.

PGI Director Dr. Jagat Ram led the institute’s team at the meeting. PGI Deputy Director (Admn) Amitabh Avasthi among others also participated.

Besides the Advanced Cardiac Centre, PGI also has an Advanced Pediatrics Centre (opened in 1997) and Advanced Eye Centre (inaugurated in 2006).

Work on all three projects is expected to start soon. A media statement issued by PGI on Sunday, quoted Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda as welcoming the development and reiterating the government’s resolve to provide health facilities and coverage to all at affordable price at their doorstep. He was also quoted as urging the Government of Himachal Pradesh to provide land at the earliest so that work on the Satellite Centre at Una could start immediately.

Advanced Mother and Child Centre

The PGI statement informed that the Advanced Mother and Child Centre will be a 300-bedded facility aimed at achieving a quantum jump in obstetric and neonatal tertiary care. It will establish new facilities like intensive care unit (ICU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with level 4 services, high dependency unit (HDU), fetal medicine unit, robotic surgery, human milk bank, advanced infertility services and reproductive endocrinology.

This state of the art Advanced Centre, claimed to be first of its kind in Northern Region, would also enhance the training of health professionals by acting as an advanced simulation and skill training centre. It would also create world class advanced research facilities. Importantly, the Centre would make a substantial contribution towards reduction of maternal, prenatal and neonatal mortality in the region.

Advanced Neurosciences Centre

The Advanced Neurosciences Centre, a 300-bedded facility, would help in creating state of the art facilities to offer timely as well as best treatment for neurological and neurosciences disorders. It will provide increased bed strength, more number of OTs, ICUs and ventilators and affordable health care. This Centre would provide additional facilities like brain suite, mapping, invasive  neurophysiological techniques and advanced imaging technology. The Centre would act as a training centre for neuro specialists from across the country.

Satellite Centre at Una

The Satellite Centre at Una in HP, on the lines of the existing Satellite Centre at Sangrur in Punjab, would be a 300-bedded state of the art hospital aimed at reducing the referrals to PGI and providing quality healthcare facilities to the people of Himachal Pradesh. The Centre would provide specialised services in the departments of medicine, gynaecology, general surgery, paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, radiology, dermatology, and many more. The Centre is expected to improve survival, reduce disability, ensure better rehabilitation and quality of life and affordable quality healthcare to the people of that region.

Lets Make That Effort; Call Toll Free No., File Online Complaint

0

Fighting corruption may well-nigh be an impossible task, but then honest and sincere efforts can sometimes do wonders, make even the seemingly impossible possible. Claiming to work on this premise, the Vigilance Bureau in Punjab has launched a toll free helpline (1800-1800-1000) and enabled lodging of online complaints on its website to reach out to the general public for a partnership in the fight against the malaise.

On the eve of Independence day, Punjab Vigilance Bureau chief, Additional Director General of Police BK Uppal, said as part of a multi-pronged strategy, the bureau besides launching a toll free helpline and online complaint filing facility, was extensively using the electronic media platforms, pasting informatory posters prominently in government offices and organising awareness camps in the state under a zero tolerance approach towards corruption at all levels in the government.

Assuring full confidentiality of informers and zero tolerance towards misconduct on the part of state Vigilance Bureau’s own officials, Uppal said the stage has been set for seamless information sharing, now it is time for members of the general public and honest public servants to show a will and resolve to fearlessly report corrupt practices and demands for bribe they come across to win the fight against corruption.

Specifically naming Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), revenue and police departments,Uppal also called upon senior field officers of these and other organisations to keep a strict vigil and monitor their grievances redressal mechanisms and take prompt action in case of bribery complaints in public dealing offices.

Providing information about action taken by the bureau in its anti-corruption drive, he said in 44 traps laid in the last three months, the bureau has nabbed 52 public servants red handed.

Now Get A Call Alert Even On Car Wheel Theft Attempt

Anti-theft GPS devices are not new to the Indian market, yet they haven’t really caught the imagination of a mass of car owners. Here comes an all new device, that keeps a tab on the wheels of your car, too. On activation, it enables the car to call you on up to four mobiles the very instant an attempt is made to open its doors or steal its wheels, besides tracking the vehicle for you and giving you an option to immobilise your car’s engine. It also enables you to keep a tab on your children and driver, when they take out the car without you in it, by monitoring the speed, fuel level, use of air conditioner, number of stops on the way, etc. That’s not all, you can even set virtual geographical limits, which if the car crosses, a mobile call will be activated.

Chandigarh-based Black Box GPS Technologies on Thursday announced the launch of this device in three models – PUMA Tracker, PUMA Smart and PUMA Prime – with a host of new features. It claims to be the only company in the country to introduce the anti-wheel theft and mobile call feature.

The new device was formally introduced in the market by Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal.

Interacting with media persons, Rajesh Vaidya, one of the directors of the company looking after the PUMA device, said vehicle theft was increasingly becoming a cause of concern among owners since thefts are on the increase, even of wheels, fuel, etc., and the recovery rate of these stolen vehicles continues to be abysmally low.  His company, which has its manufacturing facility in Baddi (Himachal Pradesh), has its own in house research and development teams, which help it to come out with unique features, he added.

Elaborating on the other features of the device, he said, PUMA gives real time location of your vehicle anytime, anywhere on your desktop or mobile whenever you require at the click of a button. You can even immobilise the engine of your car and active a panic button to alert your near and dear ones of an emergency with your location.

The device has its own 30 hours battery back-up so it can function even without power supply for that long. A call alert goes to you even when an attempt is made to remove the device from your car.

Different models of the device are priced in the range of Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 and come with a two-year warranty. The first year service is free and from second year the charges are as low as Rs 5 per day (Rs 150 a month), informed Vaidya.

An Indigenous Inspiring Story Fit for Silver Screen

It’s no less inspiring a story than Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, which was depicted in the movie “The Social Network”…. only better, and this one is indigenous – the bold and beautiful journey of IT security solutions major Quick Heal Technologies’ MD and CEO Kailash Katkar from a ‘chawl’ (slum) in Pune to an empire which pales the operations of its multi-national competitors in India.

The gritty story of the man, who failed twice in annual examinations – in class six and nine – and nearly exited from school before being dragged through class 10 on the insistence of his teacher, is a fit case for being portrayed on the silver screen by a new age career director.

In the company of his wife Anupama, one of the promoters of the company, as 50-year-old Kailash candidly laid bare his touching story of hardships, pain and struggles, and equally of inquisitiveness, learning, determination and perseverance during “Guru Talk : An interactive talk on Indian Start-ups & the Scaling Up Mantras”, organised by CII at its Northern Region headquarters in Chandigarh on Friday evening, he was profusely greeted with spontaneous rounds of applause from a select gathering of awe stuck start-ups and college students.

rn

He had one big piece of advice for aspiring start-ups, “For most youngsters today, business means money alone. If that is so, they would be well advised to opt for a well-paying job. They need to understand that the bedrock of any business is satisfactory delivery of goods or services to the customer first. It’s all about creating and maintaining customers. The core of your business, whether you are providing goods or services, should always remain strong to remain relevant in the highly competitive market conditions.

“We do not concentrate so much on competition, but on our customers. We are not running a rat race with our competitors by participating in price wars. We play on our strength, which is to give our customers a product which we know our competitors can’t give. That is our commitment to our customers, and it has worked for us”, Kailash added.

Kailash Katkar’s Story In His Own Words

Brought up along with his siblings in a ‘chawl’ in Pune, Kailash, son of a low earning machine setter technician in Philips company, had no interest in studies  even though his father somehow afforded to send all his three children to an English medium school. But, apparently, there was an inherent technician in him which pushed him into learning block printing by hit and trial at a very early age, and later radio repair work, which helped him earn a few hundred rupees for his family every month.

Responding to an advertisement for post of calculator technician, with not even a bio-data in hand, he unexpectedly got the post in the face of stiff competition after the employer saw something special in the teenager. Sent to Mumbai for training, he learnt the tricks of the trade in double quick time and returned to the Pune workshop of the company, where apart from calculator repair, his natural flair made him an expert at other mechanical machines being repaired in the workshop.

Gaining the confidence of his employer, who was indulgent enough to teach him other aspects of his business like maintaining account books and customer service, Kailash was to soon buy out the workshop on instalments to be paid from accruals from the workshop. This was the year 1990 and Kailash had just turned an entrepreneur – a one-man army.

rn

During the course of calculator repair for bank clients, he became curious about computers and learnt a few things about the “wonder machine” by reading books on computer basics. Despite initial refusal by clients to allow him to touch their expensive computers and printers, opportunity presented itself   before him and he grabbed it with both hands. After success with repairing computers in a bank, and later in a public sector general insurance company – New India Assurance Company – which surprised everyone, his big break came when he made functional three printers junked by the Times of India office in Pune.

Following the feat, he won an annual maintenance contract (AMC), his first, for three computers with the accounts department of the newspaper office. He won several AMC contracts thereafter and business began to roll. He also developed the technique of repairing floppy disks to the pleasant surprise of clients, who earlier did not have an option but to discard them.

Here came a transformational turn in his life, which was to catapult him and his brother Sanjay Katkar (now Chief Technology Officer in the company), four years younger to him, into the new age world of IT security solutions. Looking  to seek admission in B.Tech. Electronics, Sanjay, after concerted persuasion from his elder brother, took up computer science as his subject of study. After initial hiccups, Sanjay took a liking for the subject.

And, when the time came for the younger sibling to take up a project as part of the B.Tech course, on Kailash’s suggestion Sanjay chose to develop an anti-virus software because virus infected computers had started to become an issue with computer users, though viruses were few, and seldom struck. The existing anti-viruses being marketed by MNCs could only detect virus-infected files but not heal them. The infected files had to be deleted.

Success came early, first in the form of a manual solution wherein codes had to be changed in individual computers. Later a tool was developed to kill then prevalent virus ‘michelangelo’. More tools – 7 to 8 of them – followed, each targeting a specific virus. Kailash began to copy these tools into the computers of his clients, much to their satisfaction.

rn

Till then these clients were using licensed anti-viruses from MNCs like Symantec and Norton, and they advised us to create our own brand and sell in the market. After 18 months of working late into the nights, Sanjay developed the first branded anti-virus in 1995, which was marketed under the brand name ‘Quick Heal’.
Marketing, not the forte of either of the two siblings, was always going to be a big challenge. It took Kailash quite some time to convince his computer AMC clients to start using the software. But once the product started moving, a big challenge presented itself before the brothers. Computers of a well known public sector undertaking – Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS),  Khadakwasla, Pune – came under a severe virus attack, but scientists and programmers in the organisation were just not convicted with the young Katkar brothers’ abilities.

After much goading by Kailash’s existing clients they finally allowed Sanjay access to one of their infected computers. Sanjay was able to identify the virus and it took him two days to manually remove it from the computers. Having taken samples of the virus, the younger sibling took a week to develop a tool to kill the virus. All computers were secured and the brothers won a contract for installing licensed anti-virus on 25 computers initially and later on all 200 computers of CWPRS. With stamp of approval of a major public sector organisation, the brand was up and away.

However, the revenue generated by the lone office in Pune did not prove to be enough to sustain the requirement of continuous development of anti-virus software by the company. More branches needed to be opened in adjoining cities like Mumbai and Nasik, but the meagre bank balance of Rs. 70,000-80,000 was a big dampener. Banks were not inclined to help with loans.

Nonetheless, on the advice of Kailash’s friend working with IMB to go for experienced marketing personnel to man the branches, the brothers took a gamble and placed an expensive half page advertisement in the Times of India for marketing personnel, which consumed half their savings.

The response was over whelming, with aspirants assuming that Katkars were moneyed people. The first branch in Nasik outperformed their most optimistic projections, generating a business of Rs 1.25 lakh in just one month of becoming operational, though the Mumbai branch did not do well. This experience got the brothers to rethink their sales and marketing strategy. They decided to concentrate on smaller towns, which had no competition, and where they were like god-sent for clients needing their services. Branches were thus opened in towns like Nagpur, Kolhapur, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, etc. Ahmedabad was added on demand.

In 2010, US venture capital firm Sequoia Capital partnered with Quick Heal Technologies and invested 12 Million USD to further bolster it. The, by now,  global IT security solutions provider went for an initial public offer (IPO) in February 2016 which raised Rs 451 crore. It was oversubscribed 11 times.

Today Quick Heal Technologies has, apart from Pune, branches in 36 cities, each one of which is covering a big area around. With 50 partners in its place of origin Pune, the company now has an army of 17,000 partners around the world and staff strength in excess of 1400.

Do we need to say more .. HATS OFF !!

Green Jobs Council, PEDA to Set Up Centre of Excellence

India needs to add 1, 20, 000 MW of Green energy through solar power, biomass and wind power by the year 2022. Achieving this ambitious target would require tens of lakhs of trained manpower at facilities coming up on the ground at a frenetic pace.

In this connection, the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), an initiative of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) will be jointly setting up a Centre of Excellence for skill development in the state, targeted at meeting an estimated demand for 15 lakh Green jobs in the region.

PHOTOS BY: LIFE IN CHANDIGARH

Revealing this while addressing a ‘Convention on Green Growth and the Future Jobs’, organised by CII along with Chandigarh Chapter of CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and SCGJ at CII Northern Region headquarters here on Thursday, Dr Praveen Saxena, Chief Executive Officer, SCGJ, said “The modalities for setting up the Centre of Excellence are being worked out. Youth from the region would be skilled at par with international standards and given certification by the government. Government certification on international standards will enable youth to find work anywhere in the world”, he added.

Dr Sabeena Mathayas

Dr Saxena said, “Going Green is a multi-million dollar industry with huge opportunities for jobs and creating new avenues. The country needs to add 1,20,000 MW of Green energy, through solar power, biomass and wind power. This will not only help protect the environment, but also create jobs for the youngest country in the world with an estimated 65% youth manpower in the next 10 years. The National Skill Development Council (NSDC) is working on sectors like water, waste management, transport, etc. to standardize skill practices and aligning them with international standards.”

On the occasion, a MoU was also signed between national SCGJ and JS Renewable Pvt Ltd, Delhi, under which 200 employees of JS Renewable will be trained by the Council. The training and certification will be conducted under the Recognition Prior Learning program.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Sabeena Mathayas, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Consultant – Standards, NSDC, said, “The industrial eco-system is changing with the adoption of eco-friendly practices. This also requires changes in the methods of training and skills imparted to workers to match skill needs and fill any skill mismatches. The Council has been working on standardizing the curriculum of skill training programs for workers to make them employable for Green jobs, which means adopting skill practices which minimize the impact on the environment”.

PEDA Executive Director Balour Singh, in his address, said, “The government is working on a mission mode to maximize the use of Green energy so as to preserve natural resources. To promote the same we need trained people who will work on the ground and Green entrepreneurs who will in turn create jobs in this sector.”

Abhimanyu Deswal, Co-Chairman, IGBC Chandigarh Chapter & Director, GLM Infratech Pvt Ltd, said, “With enormous amount of construction happening all across, the real estate industry needs to explore the concept of Green buildings. With emerging green economy, Green jobs will follow.”

Prof (Dr) Rudra Rameshwar from LM Thapar School of Management, Thapar University, Patiala, emphasised that India’s overall goal should be growth through quality jobs and investment, growth through trust and transparency and growth through effective regulation in order to start a new cycle of economic growth covering the 17 goals for sustainable development.
