Punjab Races Ahead To Protect Frontline Warriors Against Covid-19

With a spike in Covid-19 positive cases, the frontline warriors, battling to contain the disease and save precious lives, are finding themselves vulnerable to catching the deadly infection themselves because of shortage of personal protective equipments (PPEs) and surgical masks.

There is good news for Punjab, which along with the rest of the country, is racing against time to meet the shortfall. Five private units in the state have been cleared by competent authorities to prepare this protective gear on a war-footing.

A Punjab government press release quoting state Industries Minister Sunder Sham Arora said three more Ludhiana firms – Shiva Textiles, Swamy Textiles and Shingora – have joined Phagwara based JCT Fabrics and Ludhiana based Ever Shine Garments in getting approvals from competent authorities for manufacturing and supplying PPEs.

It said these firms, after passing the mandatory testing phase, have been granted approvals by Coimbatore based South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), the authorised testing laboratories for this purpose.

For manufacturing N 95 Masks and N 99 masks, Hoshiarpur based Surgeine and Oxyclear have got the go-ahead, with two other Ludhiana based firms Gurkirpa Textiles and Navyug Laminates given permission to supply the PPE fabric.

This follows efforts made by the state Industries Department in engaging and facilitating textile and technical textile industry to manufacture critical life-saving equipments, the release added.

In all 20 technical textile units have been identified who are manufacturing, or are capable of manufacturing PPEs and masks, and a number of these units are in the process of developing samples to be sent to the authorised laboratories for testing.

Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) is providing 100% project finance loans of up to Rs 50 lakh, with a 5 year term and 5% interest rate. This is being done under the SIDBI Assistance for Facilitating Emergency Response to Coronavirus.

Countries Bleed, Humanity Thrives!

For someone professionally trained to be a sceptic, who over the years degenerated to be an outright cynic, like other members of his ilk, because of the demand of modern day sensational journalism, it took me many more years after exiting mainstream media to restore some positivity.

Now that I consciously try to look at the brighter side of things, it doesn’t come as a surprise that I can see a lot of positives emerging out of the raging Covid-19 madness. And I am sure this may be occurring, or beginning to occur, to several others like me too.

While the world by and large looks at it as a curse, with most countries bleeding and on their knees, the way humanity has apparently resurrected itself, it might after all turn out to be a blessing in disguise, after paying a heavy price, of course…….thousands of deaths, all pervading fear psychosis, economies in shambles and an unimaginable trail of unemployment in the aftermath.

The world may never be the same again after the pandemic gets over. The rich and powerful nations have realised that they are equally vulnerable to unforeseen calamities (wrath of Nature) as the less powerful and the weak. The realisation has perhaps dawned on them that all countries need to work together.

World bodies, national governments, scientific communities and voluntary organisations are working overtime in close cooperation to collectively grapple with the pandemic of this size and proportions, a show of solidarity perhaps never seen before. How long this feeling lasts, one cannot tell, but the very fact that it has happened for once is by itself a big positive.

Back home, the air is lightest, cleanest and freshest in decades, river Ganga has been remarkably cleansed, something not achieved despite a herculean government effort; people from the plains are delighted to once again get a clear view of snow clad mountains after years, and the revered status of doctors in society has been restored.

Women for once are happy to see their hubbies shackled and confined to four walls of their homes, the men have received a welcome break from their demanding bosses, and parents are happy to see their children helping out in household chores, with bais staying away. Family bonding and togetherness, a luxury till recently, has been the biggest positive. Movies, masti and long lost pastimes are filling in for entertainment, and keeping the Coronavirus blues at bay. A spike in the happiness quotient of families is quite evident.

In these difficult times, the milk of human kindness is visibly overflowing. An ever increasing number of people are coming forward to enquire about the safety and welfare of their lesser privileged brethren, who are being helped out with compassion, rations, other essentials and hygiene and safety kits. Children are also seen taking the initiative and enthusiastically participating in community service.

Local administrations, often the target of public ire over their indifferent and lackadaisical approach to public service, have also risen to the occasion, working round the clock to support the untiring efforts of medical fraternity and law enforcement agencies, and to ensure that public is put to minimum inconvenience despite the extraordinary circumstances.

The sanitation workers, who have been steadfastly opposing the mandatory wearing of hygiene and safety gear, are now seen voluntarily wearing face masks and gloves.

There is an unprecedented nationwide scramble for innovation, with startups, MSMEs and well established big industries, both in the public and private sector, striving to quickly develop Covid-19 testing kits, personal protective equipments (PPEs), low-cost ventilators, etc to meet the shortages in the emergency situation. The highly inadequate health infrastructure in the country is surely going to benefit immensely from these efforts in the long run.

The rich, famous and the powerful have already indicated that the pandemic has forced them to look at life from a different perspective, and if they really mean what they say, it could augur well for the future of the country.

And, even if it is early days and the situation is fluid, the worldwide praise and appreciation which India has received for its initial handling of the Covid-19 outbreak situation, as opposed to its mishandling by many of the advanced countries, has only further raised the prestige of the country in the eyes of the world.

With the world targeting China for the outbreak of the Covid-19 infection, it’s advantage India, for the time being at least!

Now Order Groceries, Other Essentials Online On Punjab App

Keeping in view the difficulties faced by people in ordering, and getting delivery of groceries and other essentials at their doorstep from retailers amid Covid-19 related curfew, the Punjab government has expanded its Cova App to include this service as well.

The App was originally launched to provide real time status of Covid-19 patients, and also had features like donation to CM Relief Fund, checking on symptoms of Corona Virus, generating curfew passes, connecting to a doctor, becoming a volunteer, list of Corona hospitals, reporting mass gatherings, government orders, etc.

A Punjab government press release said that the expanded feature in the Cova App will enable more effective delivery of groceries by local vendors at the doorstep of people across the state amid widespread complaints of delivery contact numbers being found unavailable, busy on invalid by citizens. Vendors were also finding it difficult to deal with the high volume of incoming orders and delivering to the right addresses.

The App, available on Android Play Store and iOS AppStore, will now facilitate delivery of state notified grocery and essential goods through local vendors.

The new module will enable vendors to register themselves as suppliers and enlist their delivery executives for curfew passes. It will also empower the district administrations to approve/reject any vendor, as also act as a monitoring authority on citizens’ complaints of overpricing or adulteration.

A citizen just needs to select his/her location, and the App will automatically populate the nearby registered vendors. An order can be placed on the App itself and payment made post delivery of the items.

The interactive citizen mobile application was launched by the Punjab government through its innovative Digital Punjab Team. The new feature has been built into the App with support from Uengage Services Pvt Ltd, which has worked with the government team on this initiative without levying any charges, according to Vini Mahajan, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Government Reforms and Public Grievances.

‘DMart Ready’ Mobile App

Meanwhile, D-MART, which, collectively with the Dhillon Group as a whole, has donated Rs 5.05 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fun – Covid-19, has also started home delivery of essential goods via its newly launched Mobile App (DMart Ready) to mitigate the hardships faced by citizens in view of the curfew restrictions.

However, a visit to the App revealed that individual orders have been suspended till further orders because of the backlog of orders and shortage of available staff in view of the movement restrictions. Currently slots are available for group orders exceeded Rs 15,000 in select areas only.

How About 5 Mins Of Daily Janata Prayers™ Now, For Forgiveness & Mercy

If prayers be a powerful medium of communicating with the unseen Creator of this universe, on the occasion of Ramnavami, when the entire country is immersed in reverence of Lord Rama, how about all of us devoting 5 minutes daily to ‘Janata Prayers’ now, to seek forgiveness of Mother Nature for our arrogant and callous behaviour, and mercy for ourselves from Her wrath, which is manifesting itself in epidemics/pandemics and other calamities.

Coronavirus, one of the biggest challenges faced by mankind in recent times, has proved a great leveller, sparing no one, from the man in the street, to the high and the mighty.

People who have amassed immense wealth, those who have attained great power and those who pride themselves in their unparalleled achievements and accomplishments, have, all of a sudden, realised how immaterial all these materialistic things are, and how utterly helpless and vulnerable they are despite all the resources at their command. The great fear of catching the super virus has forced them to take cover in the confines of their homes on an even footing with the common man.

Some of them have also gone public to admit this reality of life and resolved to be more compassionate towards fellow human beings. The milk of human kindness can also be seen in ample measure with the super rich and the powerful opening their hearts and loosening their purse strings in a show of solidarity with their lesser privileged brethren.

A heartening take away from these developments has been the increasing realisation among people that Mother Nature is paying us back with vengeance for plundering Her bountiful resources out of greed. Climate change, storms, floods, forest/bush fires, earthquakes, tsunamis to epidemics/pandemics, etc, are just manifestations of Nature’s wrath over the human race’s misconduct.

Man has been challenging the Creator (of this universe) at every step. Armed with the power of science and technology, man has come to believe that he can find solutions to every challenge thrown at him by the Supreme Being. Billions and billions are spent annually on worldwide research to counter these apparently self healing mechanisms of Nature. But man’s arrogance and stubbornness has steadfastly refused to accept this theology.

All this when a simple show of faith can do the trick – keep the Creator of this universe always in our thoughts, seek his forgiveness for our past follies and blessings to follow the righteous path.

We are a great civilisation, with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, enshrined in our ancient scriptures, to fall back on. We have to show the way to the world through the medium of faith.

While we perform ‘Janata Prayers’ for God’s forgiveness for our follies, and seek his blessings to spare mankind from the scourge of Coronavirus, let us also pray for peace and harmony in the world.

Amen!

For Peace & Serenity, Dance Away Your Blues

0

When most of us are struggling to make peace with life locked up by the coronavirus pandemic scare, a family of classical dancers is finding itself perfectly in harmony with the new normal. For freelance classical dance instructor Rahul Gupta (31), his wife Nandini and 9-year-old son Bharat, life is as wonderful and enjoyable as it ever was. Yoga and some meditation in the morning, bharatnatyam practice in the evening, for them life is a breeze.

While exhorting others to follow, and feel the difference, Rahul, who also runs the Kalalyam Dance Institute, which regularly holds evening classes at The Gurukul, Sector 20, Panchkula, says “yoga is an integral part of Indian classical dance forms. Every dance practice session or performance starts with pranayam, surya namaskar and other stretching yoga routines to warm up the body and make it supple and flexible, an absolute necessity for a satisfying outcome of any classical dance routine.”

Photos By : Life In Chandigarh

Dwelling on the spiritual aspects of bharatnatyam, he says it is a form of sadhana (meditation). Besides giving the practitioner peace and tranquility, this dance form, like many other Indian classical forms, replaces restlessness with calm and composure, and inculcates the true spirit of humility and restraint. “The energy, which the classical dance-yoga activity generates, is unmatched,” he adds.

Rahul asserts that his journey as a classical dance instructor in India and abroad (he has lived in Qatar, Bahrain and Australia also) has been replete with instances of rich, spoilt and arrogant children transforming into simple and humble human being after their tryst with classical dance. He has also seen ladies traumatised by separation from husbands, or brutal domestic violence, finding a new purpose in life by immersing themselves into classical dance.

The classical dance instructor wants people, confined to the four walls of their homes, to wash away their blues. “Give yourself a chance to convert your fears and perceived sense of punishment into opportunities for finding peace, calm, relaxation and inner bliss. Yoga, meditation and meaningful dance forms, especially Indian classical, are a perfect recipe towards that end,” he emphasises.

Lets Find Happiness Within, Small-Small Things Matter A Lot

0

Just a few weeks back, had someone asked you, what if you get 3 weeks to work from the comfort of your home in the company of your family, wouldn’t you have laughed it off as a joke! But now that the improbable but welcome thought has become a reality, thanks to the Coronavirus infection being declared a pandemic, leading to a nationwide lockdown, are you having a whale of a time in the company of your family?

Going by what we hear in our social circles, most are not being able to utilise this free time with family to enhance their happiness quotient, but instead brooding and excessively worrying over what’s going to happen!

Endocrinologist Dr Sachin Mittal, University College of London fellow (2014)

In such a scenario, mental illnesses like anxiety and depression are sure to coming knocking at our doorstep. Forced lockdown, social distancing, and uncertainty over availability of daily essentials and finances, apart from the fear of getting infected, are driving us crazy. Add to this a steady dose of fake News, viral videos and fear-mongering, and find ourselves literally on the edge.

However, this may just be the right time to look within, examine what happiness means to us, and how finding that is the real purpose of life.

Let’s share some ideas on how to make the best use of this time –

Me-time – Life is so rushed-up in the 21st-century that most of us wish to have a day with no big to-do list. We always wish for a 20 to 30 minutes of peace and a ‘Me-Time’ – the time where we can follow any of our interests or anything which we love to do like painting, drawing or listening to music etc. May be now that peaceful “Me-Time” we have been seeking is no more elusive, let’s start doing these things which we always wanted when we were busy. Devote some time to doing breathing exercises or meditation. And once we start experiencing that serenity, it will not only make us happier and less anxious but also increase our productivity. Believe me, we will be able to prioritize and schedule those 20 minutes even after the Coronavirus battle is won.

Digital Detox – Offline is the new luxury – Believe it or not, the smart phone or the gadgets meant to ease our life have brought some more troubles also. Constant notifications/inflow of messages, steals our focus. It’s almost a reflex that people have to look at their mobile phone screens every now and then, so much so when our mobiles are out of battery even for a short while, we feel restlessness and frustrated and have an urge to go online again. But the dichotomy is many of us wish to plan a vacation with no network connectivity. But at the same time, we find it difficult to switch off the cell phone on our own. So why not try to minimize our screen indulgence and do this digital detox. Sometimes you just have to unplug from everything to find the real you.

Bring Back The Books – Ernest Hemingway said “There is no friend as loyal as a book”. Now is the best time to read all those books which we always wanted to but never got the time. “I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a book” – How true are these words of famous author J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter series. So, let’s pick a great book of our choice to give a chance for that magic to happen.

Family Time – As the famous saying goes “The best thing you can spend on your kids is time”. It’s your time to catch up whatever you have been missing in the daily rush. Sit with your kids and hear out their stories. Know more about their friends and their emotions. Share your own feelings, both anxieties as well as aspirations. Let this time be your family bonding time.

Gardening & Household Work – Roman Statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero wrote many centuries ago “If you have a Garden and a Library, you have everything you need”. Spending some time in the garden may be one of the most refreshing things. Apart from that, actively participating in household chores would be great. In the absence of domestic helps, the lady of the house would appreciate that a lot. This is the time to share the responsibilities. This would help in keeping the household situation warm and friendly as well.

Bring On Yesteryears’ Fun – It’s time to revisit your childhood, bring family games like Carrom, Chess, Ludo and Monopoly back in your living rooms. A friendly game of cards or a game of Uno with your loved ones will surely leave you with everlasting memories to cherish.

Health Is Wealth – In these times, we need to invest in our mental as well as physical health. A healthy person is able to enjoy life to its fullest, simply because the body and mind are in harmony! The easiest way to do that is to eat a nourishing diet, take up some physical activity or yoga and spend a few minutes every day in meditation. This would surely give us more happiness than any other material thing.

The best way out is within us … so make sure to live the rest of the 21-day break to your heart’s fill.

Teenager Gets Masks Made & Distributed Among Slum Dwellers Along With Other Essentials

With the entire country locked in a grim battle to contain the Coronavirus pandemic, and essential supplies, including protective gear, running short, it’s heartening to see various sections of the society coming forward to supplement the government’s efforts. If that initiative comes from an enlightened and public-spirited school student it becomes all the more appreciable.

A Class XII student of Vivek High School Chandigarh, Kaustav Kochhar has shown the way to the community that if you have the spirit, and the will, you will invariably find a way to contribute that little bit extra to make a significant impact.

Photo By : Life In Chandigarh

The 16-year-old, who has been keenly following the developments relating to the spread of Coronavirus infection, had noticed that like in all other crisis situations, it is the underprivileged sections of the society which were the hardest hit by the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown/curfew.

Kaustav resolved to do something to mitigate the suffering of these ill-prepared and vulnerable sections. He found that a face mask, the first line of defence against catching coronavirus, was in short supply and out of their reach. So he immediately did some online research and came out with a perfect solution for a home-made mask, which is washable and reusable.

Having collected a breathable cotton fabric from the market, he caught hold of a tailor to custom-prepare masks as per WHO guidelines for home-made face masks. He has so far got distributed 250 face masks, 150 soaps, 25 sanitiser bottles, 50 kg rice, 50 kg pulses and 500 packets of biscuits among slum dwellers in the city through the Samarpan Foundation.

Says Kaustav, “I was concerned that this current trend of rapid spread of the virus is going to most adversely impact the underprivileged sections, which, under normal circumstances too, can barely make ends meet. If they get infected, the situation will worsen for their families. Hence the thought of making masks best suited to their needs,” he adds.

Kaustav’s plans do not end at that. He is determined to continue with his efforts and help out the underprivileged sections in these extremely trying times.
