0

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region will be engaging with the respective governments in states within its jurisdiction to set up GST-like councils to generate a consensus on reforms in critical areas like labour, power, agriculture, land, education and healthcare.

Sharing this during a media interaction following a meeting with the CII Northern Region membership at its headquarters in Sector 31 on Monday, Deepak Jain, Chairman, CII Northern Region who is also Chairman & Managing Director of Lumax Industries Ltd, said among other action points of this engagement with the state governments will be policy advocacy on a host of issues like onboarding the National Single Window System and the ‘Gati Shakti’ portal.

Highlighting the key recommendations by CII Northern Region for the growth and development of the industry in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, Deepak Jain said there needs to be greater focus on creating the right infrastructure and logistics, and provide close government support to transform the region into the country’s industrial hub.

While emphasizing that states like Punjab and Haryana have a high potential for exports from sectors like textile, auto components, bi-cycle, food processing, etc., he reiterated CII’s long-standing commitment towards the growth and development of the industry and the need for a collective effort to achieve it.

CII Northern Region is readying itself to initiate an Incubation Programme for handholding budding entrepreneurs and also help them in networking to find potential investors. It is also poised to work towards bridging the rural-urban disconnect and will work extensively on bringing in diversity at workplaces in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, he added.

“This year, CII will focus on internalizing the tenets of sustainability and climate action and accelerating its globalisation journey for leadership in a changing world. This will be undertaken through an inclusive model of growth that builds trust between all stakeholders, including government, industry, society, consumers, investors and the external community,” he shared.

Giving the example of CII’s Crop Residue Management project, which he claimed is running effectively in 12 districts of Punjab and Haryana, covering 300 villages and 3 lakh acres of farmland and 50,000 farmers, he said it has created a successful model which can be scaled up with the involvement of all stakeholders to tackle the annually recurring issue of stubble-burning head on.

Deepak Jain also announced the CII National Theme for the year, ‘Towards a Competitive and Sustainable India@100: Growth, Livelihood, Globalisation, Building Trust,’ which aims to amalgamate CII’s efforts in the country towards scaling the competitiveness ladder to drive growth.

Under the aegis of the theme, CII Northern Region’s five main priorities and focus areas for the year include Export-led Growth & Competitiveness, Innovation & Digital Transformation, Sustainability and Clean Tech, Startups & Entrepreneurship, and Diversity & Inclusion.

Earlier, Deepak Jain, accompanied by Madhavkrishna Singhania, Deputy Chairman, CII Northern Region who is also Deputy MD & CEO, JK Cement Ltd and Mr Prashant A N, Regional Director, CII Northern Region, met with the CII Northern Region membership to discuss and carry forward the various initiatives of CII.

Presenting A Story Woven Within A Story

0

The other day the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) inaugurated a ‘Waste To Wonder’ Park in Sector 48-A, with three towering robots, created largely from scrap metal parts, lording over the landscape. At the formal evening ceremony, the contribution of the metal artist who created, and apparently donated, the huge sculptures, was duly acknowledged. But the official press release, splashed almost verbatim across the ‘Press Release Media’ the next day, shockingly omitted any reference to him.

What you are about to read now is an interesting story woven within a story.

Photos By : Life In Chandigarh & MCC

The metal artist in question is Pritpal Singh Matharu (artist name Polly Singh), who is known to run an industrial unit. The small and big sculptures he curates from scrap metal parts are popular by the name ‘pollybots’ (https://www.instagram.com/pollybots, https://www.facebook.com/pollybots/).

The ones he has created for the Waste To Wonder Park are massive in size and the people in the neighbourhood are in awe of them.

The story within the story begins here.

On receiving a formal media invite, this writer, aroused by curiosity to know what the ‘Waste To Wonder’ really entailed, reached the venue at the appointed time in the evening. The City Mayor, the chief guest for the occasion, had not yet arrived, and the officials and a large crowd were waiting in anticipation.

As the writer gorged his eyes on the imposing structures, trying to figure out the forms and the metal scrap materials which had been used, his eyes fell on a familiar-looking figure dressed formally for the occasion. The recollection wasn’t a pleasant one. Instantly the writer decided to ignore him as the very sight of him conjured up memories of the man’s very ungentlemanly, and then seemingly unpardonable conduct towards the writer in the past.

The man was the creator of the sculptures.

Anyway, the writer took a full round of the park, took some pictures, and after listening to the routine official speeches came away.

Reflecting on the incident triggered a tormenting tussle in the mind, one which always pits a journalist against his personal self. Should, or should not the writer highlight the man and his creations in his informative write-up for the benefit of readers. The resolution was not going to be easy and indeed it wasn’t. The writer decided to give it more thought.

But, the next day, browsing the mainstream media coverage of the event came as a big disappointment. There was not a word about the creator of the ‘waste to wonder’ structures, the main attractions in the park, only the near verbatim reproduction of the official press release, with who inaugurated, and which all other high official were present, finding prime of place in the write-ups.

This helped to some extent in resolving the issue in the mind of the writer. Credit must be given where it is due. The constant reminder of the teaching of wise men to forgive and forget eventually proved too overwhelming for the writer, thus this write-up. Feeling much relieved.

For the records, the park in Sector 48-A in the midst of society flats is spread across 1.75 acres. Besides the towering structures created out of metal scrap, the entrances, benches and outlining of plant beds are made from bricks procured from the C&D (construction and demolition waste) recycling plant of the MCC. A ludo/snakes & ladders game laid out in the park is also a creation from recycled materials supplied by the C&D plant.

Centre Of Excellence For Retina™ Launched With Latest Imaging Systems

0

Mirchia’s Laser Eye Clinic was already a name to reckon with in the region. With its merger a year ago with Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, a 135+ strong chain of hospitals across 11 countries in two continents, its stature has grown all that much more. On Tuesday, Mirchia’s Laser Eye Clinic launched its ‘Centre of Excellence for Retina’ for early and deep diagnosis and treatment of various retinal diseases.

Briefing media persons about the ‘Centre of Excellence For Retina’ with his team of retina specialists Dr Parveen Sen, Dr Shilpa Goyal and Dr Sahil Jain, the unassuming Dr Rajiv Mirchia, Director, Mirchia’s Laser Eye Clinic, claimed that with the introduction of the latest Ultra Wide Field and Ultra High Definition, Multimodal Imaging machine and the high performance Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) machine from  Germany, early and deep diagnosis of various retinal diseases has been taken to an altogether new level.

Photos By: Mirchia’s Laser Eye Clinic & Life In Chandigarh

The Centre of Excellence for Retina was formally unveiled by Dr Suman Singh, Director, Health and Family Welfare, and Mission Director, National Health Mission, Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Later talking to your own news website LifeInChandigarh.com, Dr Mirchia explained that Ultra Wide Field and Ultra High Definition, Multimodal Imaging Facility is an advanced imaging technique that produces high-resolution 3-D angiograms of the retinal and other underlying blood vessels for effective detection of retinal diseases and abnormalities.

The state-of-the-art platform provides a 163-degree ultra-wide field image of the retina. This provides an enhanced view of the retinal structure and the vessels with unparalleled clarity. It is a great tool to screen the retina of all diabetic patients and detect diabetic retinopathy in early stages, allowing for better treatment of patients and prevent irreversible blindness due to diabetes.

Apart from diabetic retinopathy, it will immensely help in early and accurate detection of age related macular degeneration, Eales disease and even some childhood retinal problems like retinopathy of prematurity and hereditary retinal conditions, Dr Mirchia added.

The latest version of the Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) is also a high performance and non-invasive machine which will particularly help in age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy patients who need frequent monthly follow ups and injections. These conditions can now be precisely followed simply by non-invasive scanning of the eye.

Dr Michia shared that with better survival rates among very immaturely bo babies and enhanced life expectancy even among diabetics the issues of retinal conditions are on the increase and these require early and deep diagnosis for better treatment outcomes.

Did you know!

Eyes are the most complex sensory organ of the body. Powered by the strongest and fastest muscles in the body, your eyes are made up of – believe it or not – four million working parts and detect over 10 million colours! Capable of processing and delivering 1500 pieces of information to the brain every minute, your eyes capture your life like a video camera.  (Information courtesy : www.dragarwal.com

Whether Child Autistic? Only Medical Assessment Can Tell

0

Remember Shahrukh Khan’s portrayal of an autistic character named Rizwan Khan in the hit film ‘My Name Is Khan’! Even today autism is a much misunderstood neuro developmental brain disorder for which the world observes Autism Awareness Day on April 2 every year.

Coinciding with the day, NAC Manimajra, Chandigarh based ASHA Child Care and Development Clinic is organising a daylong free health camp on Sunday for screening of children below 6 years of age for signs of autism.

So, if you know of any children in your family, friends and neighbours circles who are displaying behaviours of concern regarding their social communication and language development, please inform them about this camp.

Dr Chhaya Prasad, neuro developmental and behavioural pediatrician who runs the clinic, tells us that the free camp will be held on Sunday (April 2) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration for the camp is free, but compulsory. Registration can be made on phone Nos. 9876819949 & 9878978315.

Dr Chhaya shared with your own news website LifeInChandigarh.com that every child with poor eye contact, or poor language development, is not autistic. It is very important to get a complete medical assessment done, she added.

The assessment process is initiated by a developmental paediatrician, who first clinically observes a child, looks at its symptoms, observes its social and communication behaviours, checks for language development and takes complete history before carrying out a few tests. Then, the developmental paediatrician counsels the parents regarding the developmental status of the child, Dr Chhaya informed.

She emphasised that it is important that the problem in the child’s developmental domains is identified early so that an early intervention by a specialised multi-disciplinary team can help the child attain and /or enhance the skills that do not develop naturally as they should with age.

Explaining further she said autism is not a speech disorder. It is a neuro developmental brain disorder wherein the child is not able to socialise and communicate with others in an age-appropriate manner.

Inclusion and learning in a mainstream school and regular environment is not only an autistic child’s right but also needs to be encouraged by all concerned, Dr Chhaya stressed.

Some markers for autistic children

    rn

  • The child may have little or no interest in eye contact with family members
  • rn

  • No orientation response when child’s name is mentioned/called; absence of blabbing and jargons in the first year of life
  • rn

  • Cannot engage in social interactions, and may appear to be very indifferent towards parents
  • rn

  • The ability to share and coordinate attention, with attention of a family member, is nearly absent
  • rn

  • The child will have some repetitive, ritualistic play habits along with the above mentioned other symptoms
  • rn

It Was Some Foodie Chaos, At Alliance Francaise!

0

The free-for-all event was to be held outdoors in the Sector 36 campus lawns of the international organisation promoting French language and francophone culture, but because of the continuing inclement weather it was moved indoors as a precautionary measure. And, this was the reason for the chaos. The not so large hall was never going to take in the hundreds of food enthusiasts who thronged the place, and soon it turned a madhouse.

Photos By : Life In Chandigarh

Nevertheless, the crowd was decent and there was no pushing and jostling. The wait was worth it. There wouldn’t be many who did not get a good taste of the wide variety of lip-smacking snacks, desserts and drinks (all but one vegetarian due to navratras) from Mauritius, Lebanon, Tahiti, Tunisia, France and Canada. The stall from Burundi, for some reason, remained unpopulated.

The sweet cinnamon roll at the Canadian stall was heavenly. If it was not so filling, and considering that there were other delicacies also to be tried out, one wouldn’t have minded having another one for sure. The Nanaimo Bar (barfi), a well known dessert from Canada named after the city of Nanaimo in British Columbia, also looked tempting, but had to be resisted.

Visitors were spoilt for choice at the Labanese stall, where the charming Hala Khneifes, residing in the city with her fauji husband, dished out a tempting fare of traditional Lebanese Hummus (made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice and garlic garnished with olive oil, paprika and parsley), Batenjen Moutabbal (made of roasted and spiced eggplant, tahini, olive, salt and lemon juice) and Batata Harra (a potato dish).

Mana-ish Za’atar and Nammoura completed the menu of dishes. The Lebanese lemonade had a differently tasty tinge to it.

At the Mauritius stall, Vidola Deerpaul, also residing in the city with her family, gave the visitors a taste of soft and sumptuous wrap called Dhol Puri (a salted wheat flour and chana dal roti stuffed with a variety of cooked vegetables), Coconut Cake (barfi) and a fabulous fresh mixed fruit punch. The stall was artistically decorated in typical Mauritius marine style with three bottles of Spiced Rums, a major attraction, standing out in the middle.

The Tahitian stall served the visitors Tahitian Salad and another salad called Po’E made from coconut milk and bananas. Salads also dominated at the Tunisian stall. Besides other things, it served Couscous and Tunisian salad.

Smoked cheese, cheese of the valley of mashobra and cream cheese bread were among the attractions at the French stall.

A Jewel In City Beautiful’s Crown; Sure Shot, Dil Khush Ho Jayega!

0

In a small but modern city like Chandigarh, where options of places to visit on weekends, other than the crowded restaurants, malls, clubs and multiplexes, are few, most of us still tend to miss looking up some leisurely but delightful places despite being fully aware of them. Visiting one such place, long lurking in my mind, with my family on a Sunday (March 12) turned out to be a very pleasant experience.

As the family stepped onto the weekend traffic-restricted approach road to the place, seeing a steady stream of visitors walking down the narrow lane, lined with colourful bill boards of exotic birds, towards the entrance came as a pleasant surprise to me. I would never have imagined it to be such a popular destination. It also got me wondering why it took me so long to convince myself to come here!

Nestling in the lap of nature, and spread over 6.5 acres of forest land, the Chandigarh Bird Park can rightly claim to be one of the jewels of the City Beautiful. Aesthetically designed, the park boasts of beautiful landscaping, well planned sections with attractively structured small and large aviaries (enclosures where birds are housed), waterfalls, ponds, other water bodies as well as arched and meandering wooden bridges.

Two massive aviaries – one for aquatic birds (water birds) and other for terrestrial birds (type of birds generally found on the ground or close to it) – are in fact claimed to the largest structures in the aviary domain in the country.

Located at Nagar Van, adjacent to the Sukhna Lake Club sports complex and developed by the Department of Forest & Wildlife, UT Chandigarh, Chandigarh Bird Park was inaugurated in November 2021 by the then First Lady of India, Mrs Savita Kovind. The purpose was to create awareness about bird conservation especially among the young minds.

The main attractions in the park, which is home to some of the exotic aquatic, terrestrial and tamed birds commonly bred in India, are African Love Birds, Budgerigars, White Swan, Black Swan, Wood Duck, Golden Pheasant, Yellow Golden Pheasant, Green Wing Macaw, Dun Conures, African Grey Parrot, Finches and Melanistic Pheasant.

Care has been taken to provide ample space for each and every bird. A 58 feet flying height with total ground area approximately 200×150 feet has been ensured in each enclosure for the aquatic and terrestrial birds. The structures are designed in a way that they surround hundreds of plants of varying canopies, which gives an ideal habitat, food and shelter to these birds so that they can freely fly and breed.

The jingling sound of huge metal chain hanging curtains, adorning the entry points and some sections of these massive enclosures, is also a major attraction for visitors.

Apart from this, there is an exclusive enclosure for tamed birds where visitors, for an additional per head fee, get an opportunity to closely interact with their feathery friends, and also take pictures with a tamed bird. We made it a point to visit this enclosure. A trainer/bird handler is at hand to assist the visitors in making a tamed large Green Wing Macaw perch on your forearm. The most amazing part of the entire project, executed in less than 18 months during the peak of the pandemic, is that the entire conceptualisation, planning and execution has been done in-house by the Department of Forest & Wildlife, UT Chandigarh, without the help of any professional consultant, a rarity for projects of such scale in UT Chandigarh.

Later, in a telephonic conversation with your own news website LifeInChandigarh.com, Chief Conservator of Forests, UT Chandigarh, Debendra Dalai, an Indian Forest Service Officer, shared that the inspiration for the Chandigarh Bird Park has come from the Jurong Bird Park (49 acres) on the slopes of the Jurong Hill in Singapore, which he visited back in 2019 (Jurong has since been relocated to a much larger park in Mandai region, and renamed Bird Paradise, where it is part of a huge integrated nature and wildlife precinct called Mandai Wildlife Reserve).

“We started work on the project during the pandemic, which afforded us an opportunity to focus completely on its execution at a decent pace. So, we shut down the Nagar Van to the public, as was done with all other public places then, and were able to devote our entire time to it. The idea was to work quickly and surprise the residents with a wonderful gift. We found support at all levels in the UT Administration for the project, and here we are,” Dalai said.

“Though I have seen such aviaries in Mysore, Raipur, Chhatbir Zoo in our neighbourhood, and at other places, in terms of size the large aviaries we have constructed for aquatic and terrestrial birds are the largest structures in the aviary domain in the country. We have not allowed any compromises to be made in terms of quality as well. We want to uphold Chandigarh’s status as a laboratory, for the rest of the country to emulate,” he added.

A Navgraha (9 celestial bodies) Vatika, Nakshatra (constellation or group of stars) Van and Rashi (zodiac sign) Van are other attractions of the park.

The only sore point right through the over an hour long trek through the park was the ill maintained Navgraha Vatika, where the various plants, each associated with one of the 9 celestial bodies as per Vedic astrology, were choked dry because of the heavy unattended weeding in their beds.

There are ample places to sit and rest during your long walk along meandering pathways through the park. No eatables are allowed to be taken inside. The Woods Café, managed by Citco, with a large open compound, vends reasonably-priced snacky foods and drinks. For the souvenir hunters, there is Exotica Souvenir Shop. To quench your thirst, machines dispensing free cooled water are installed at short distances. A washroom block has also been constructed.
