Startup Aegis Personal Care Cracks Monopolistic Market

0

Here’s my story, which I am sure most clean-shaven men will relate to. I got hooked on to razors of a popular multinational brand with 3 shaving blade cartridges way back in the early 2000s, and slowly graduated to 5 shaving blade cartridges, swept away by the hype of closer and still closer shave build around them. The shaves got painful when the brand, taking advantage of its monopoly, started to jack up the prices of cartridges. Soon, the pain became unbearable.

The onset of the social media era in India threw up at least one alternative, another multinational brand I had never heard of, promising matching quality at a lesser price. With a ‘no harm in trying out’ spirit, I made the switch, and was fairly satisfied with the outcome. Having stayed loyal to the brand for quite a while, I felt the urge to make another switch, this time becoming aware of an unknown Indian brand touting to use German Safe Edge Technology in its shaving systems.

The switch was worth it as the smooth shaves lasted much longer than the products of the previous two brands I was exposed to, that too at much lesser price. The last of the cartridges from a set of 12, which I bought at a discounted price of Rs 719 way back in February 2020, is still in use with me.

Looking for advance replenishment of my stock, I learnt of a new product from the Indian brand’s stable – a razor with hyper glide technology. Having ordered a razor set with a three blade cartridge at a rock bottom introductory price, I was curious to know more. So, I enquired on the brand’s customer care WhatsApp No. and was surprised to get a prompt reply directly from a co-founder of the company owning the brand.

To cut the suspense short, the brand’s name is Zlade and the new shaving system has been christened ‘Zlade powered by BiC’. The brand is owned by Pune-based startup Aegis Personal Care LLP. It has entered into a manufacturing partnership with French brand BiC, which is supplying the same quality blades to Aegis as it is selling in Europe and US.

Anyway, ever since receiving the ordered ‘Zlade powered by BiC’ HyperGlide system in mid June this year, shaving has been a dream glide for me. It’s been nearly a month into daily shaving, and still the razor experience feels as good as on day one, the shave as smooth as it can possibly get!

During my quick WhatsApp interaction with Aegis Personal Care LLP co-founder Suraj Chaudhari a month ago I had promised that I will carry a write-up about the brand on my  news website LifeInChandigarh.com if the new shaving system lived up to its promise. And, here I am writing about the brand, more than satisfied with my experience so far.

The two other co-founders of the startup Aegis Personal Care LLP are Suraj’s friends Mihir Vaidya and Harish Amritkar.

Claims Suraj, Zlade, which began its journey in August 2018, is “on course to do Rs 40-50 Cr in annual revenues by the end of the current financial year. We grew around 250% year-on-year in the last financial year and are set to grow 350-400% this year.”

The company has received several rounds of external funding, though Suraj politely declines to divulge details beyond admitting that it is being “backed by some of the marquee family offices from India.”

It claims to have been EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) positive since February this year, and plans to continue to grow profitably.

The brand Zlade is currently focussed on shaving razors and intimate grooming trimmers for men, though it is also selling hair removal razors and trimmers for women. Taking noted model Milind Soman on board as its brand ambassador for its Ballistic trimmers, launched in the middle of the pandemic in March 2021, to fill the vacuum for a product for men’s body hair removal, Zlade has quickly established itself in the men’s intimate grooming category.

Expressing the brand’s vision for the future, Suraj says “We want to be go-to brand when it comes to shaving and intimate grooming, essentially making the word Zlade synonymous with a razor blade.”

To what is the differentiator for Zlade, he responds, saying “There are only a handful of companies in the world which can grind high quality blades matching up to the premium quality of the leading brands. We have partnered with one such company, BiC, which is the leading manufacturer of shaving razors, with products sold across over 100 countries. Our razors are now sold under brand name ‘Zlade powered by BiC’. We are thus able to provide the Indian market the same premium quality, at a price which is fair.”

The Zlade Story

The story of Zlade goes like this. Suraj and Mihir came together in 2014 with an idea to start a shaving products company, considering the need for premium quality products at prices that are fair, having experienced it themselves.

Aegis Personal Care LLP came into being in 2015 from Suraj’s 2BHK apartment in Pune, and after experimenting with multiple factories and studying consumer feedback, and bringing Harish on board in 2017, brand Zlade was launched in August 2018.

Clampdown On Single Use Plastic Bags; Is MC Serious This Time!

0

The weekly ‘apni mandi’ in Sector 45 Chandigarh on Monday had an unusually spick-and-span look to it. Despite the wet weather there was no ‘cheekad’, no water puddles, no litter or garbage, and the parking was also orderly, just as it ought to be. But what struck the mandi shoppers the most was the complete absence of single use, recycled plastic bags, replaced largely by paper bags.

An unbelievable scenario, one might say, and one wouldn’t be wrong. It was obviously for optics on an occasion. The entire machinery of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) appeared to have descended on the apni mandi, which became a showcase, even if for a day.

Photos By: Life In Chandigarh

It was International Plastic Free Bag Day and the MCC was using the occasion to once again reiterate its much hyped pledge to make the city plastic bag free, as on several occasions in the past.

As usual, Mayor Anup Gupta was there to hog the media attention, symbolically distributing one kg packets of certified compostable bags among a section of vegetable and fruit vendors, leaving the bit of interacting with them to the Commissioner. Ward councillor Gurpreet Singh also went around with them.

Displaying a sense of seriousness to the campaign to root out use of single use plastic bags in the city this time around, Commissioner Anindita Mitra told the vendors that the free distribution of compostable carry bags was purely symbolic and that henceforth it would be mandatory for them to use compostable bags only while selling their vegetable and fruits.

Considering the significant cost differential between single use plastic carry bags and the compostable bags, she assured that the Municipal Corporation will arrange to sell compostable bags at each apni mandi at a concessional rate of around Rs 200 per kg in with the help of creditable suppliers.

She said that the corporation would also encourage visitors to bring their own cloth bags with them to the apni mandis. The corporation had got made such cloth bags with compartments for the convenience of vegetable and fruit buyers and would also consider vending these bags at special counters set up in each apni mandi, she added.

At the same time she cautioned the vendors that they would face strict legal action and challans if they continue to use single use plastic carry bags.

In their own wisdom the officials distributed packets of only 5 kg capacity bags, which are least used in apni mandis, as pointed out by a vendor, following which the Commissioner assured that bags of 1 kg, 2 kg and 5 kg capacity would be made available at concessional rates in all apni mandis.

A few counters displaying decorative cloth bags and compostable carry bags were set up on the occasion for the benefit of vegetable, fruit buyers and vendors.

The Municipal Corporation has sourced the certified compostable bags from Hallomajra, Chandigarh based company HP Green Solutions, which also sells other compostable products like customised bags, packing bags, garbage bags, spoons and glasses.

Hoping against hope that this time the Municipal Corporation really means business!

Pageant Mentor Set To Open Chandigarh’s First Grooming Academy

0

Beauty pageants are no longer about beauty/handsomeness, body stats and height alone. Communication and intelligence, as well as outer and inner grooming are equally important for aspiring young girls and boys to make a mark in the glamorous world of beauty pageants and modelling.

These are the views expressed by former top 10 finalist of Pantaloon Femina Miss India 2011 pageant, noted model and grooming expert Aprajita Sharma, who is set to launch a truly professional grooming academy by the name Be You By Aprajita in Chandigarh tricity later in the year.

Photos By: Life In Chandigarh & Aprajita Sharma’s Social Media Accounts

Interacting exclusively with your own news website LifeInChandigarh.com, Chandigarh’s very own Aprajita, who has been organising online and offline grooming workshops and 4-5 day boot camps in association with luxury hotels since the pandemic, said Be You By Aprajita would be a first of its kind truly professional grooming school in the region, which will scout for talent both among males and females, unmarried and married, and groom them for the road ahead through a multi-disciplinary approach.

In the run-up to the launch of the academy, Aprajita, who has worked as a model with some of the top designers/labels like JJ Valaya, Vikram Phadnis, Gaurav Gupta, Varun Bahl, Satya Paul, Masaba Gupta, Anju Modi, Samant Chauhan, Shantanu & Nikhil, Tarun Tahiliani, Falguni Shane Peacock India and many more, would, in the coming months, announce a Miss Tricity and Mrs Tricity pageant to scout for talent, which will then be enrolled in the academy for multi-disciplinary training and grooming.

Male aspirants will be enrolled in the academy subsequently.

“I have felt that there is a dire need for such an academy in the Chandigarh tricity because not every aspiring male or female can avail of such professional training and grooming schools in the metro cities. There are huge additional costs involved and then there are also lingering concerns of safety and security, especially among females. Also, not many parents are comfortable with the idea of letting their girls venture out to far from home for training, because of concerns of being exploited,” she shared.

Commenting on the continuing hesitancy on the part of parents to let their girls venture into this glamorous world in the first instance, Aprajita, who was accompanied in the media interaction by her mother, said “Families need to support their children to live their dreams. See, there are pitfalls in any profession. There are all kinds of people at every workplace.  Parents ought to be open-minded in their approach and believe in their children that they will be able to handle the circumstances as they come.”

Talking about pressures of first, females finding their feet in the glamour world, and then to handle whatever fame comes with success, Aprajita was of the view that it depends on what kind of people are around you. Whatever the circumstances, one must always ensure that there are people around you, friends and family, who are in a position to check you in every seemingly lucrative move which has the potential of landing you in trouble. Even after tasting success, one needs to maintain humility and stay grounded. Here again, this circle around you has a role to play, she added.

Gesturing to her mother sitting nearby, she said “my mom is my biggest support. She’s there for me always, but she is also my biggest critic. That’s the kind of support you need so as not to lose your head and to sustain your existence in this glamorous field.”

Returning to the importance of grooming for success in beauty pageants and catwalks, as also acting and generally in the corporate world, Aprajita opined that grooming is all about enabling a person to give full expression to his or her potential.

Giving the example of Harnaz Kaur Sandhu, crowned Miss Universe 2021 in the pageant held in Israel, she said it was not that she tasted success immediately. She floundered in a pageant in which I was one of the judges, not because of lack of potential, but because she could not fulfil her potential. Grooming helps you do that, she emphasised.

So, what does it take to succeed in the world of pageants?

Aprajita listed out some of the key factors which play an important role in a success story – overall personality and fitness, passion, motivation and consistent dedication, confidence, good communication skills and ability to express oneself. All these aspects are taken care of in professional grooming sessions, apart from the finer nuances like voice modulation, walk style, dress sense, etiquette, etc., she explained.

Elaborating on the process of grooming, she said there are several subject experts involved apart from the one pageant mentor for the overall personality development of an individual. Depending on requirements of individuals, the team may include fitness experts, motivational experts, communication experts, actors, directors, and many more.

According to Aprajita, the overall idea of starting a much needed truly professional grooming academy in Chandigarh tricity is that the potential of the talent, available in abundance in these parts, should not go unrealised for lack of grooming, exposure and work.

Sharing her experiences thus far in the several workshops and boot camps she has held, Aprajita said the biggest challenge is of getting aspirants to first unlearn whatever misconceptions or myths they might have, and then start to learn the professional nuances of the field afresh. “The problem starts when these aspirants come with a ‘know all, done it all’ attitude and are extremely resistant to being tutored.”

Aprajita claimed that in opening this grooming academy, her main motivation is not to make money. “Having been through the journey myself all of these 12 years since finishing among the top 10 finalists in the Miss India pageant, I now want to share my experience and expertise with other talented persons in this region and help them shine in this creative as well as individualistic field.”

Apart from finishing among the top ten finalists in the Pantaloon Femina Miss India 2011 pageant, Aprajita Sharma was among the runners up in the Asian Super Model 2015 pageant held in China, where she also bagged the Miss Congeniality Award. She has also won the titles of Miss Beautiful Hair, Miss Vivacious Beauty, Miss Stylish Diva & Miss Beautiful Body in various other pageants.

Management Principles Seen Though Cookery Prism

0

Trust celebrity chef and entrepreneur Harpal Sokhi to do a thing differently, he will surprise you every single time. So, right from his signature ‘namak shamak, namak shamak, daall dete hain, namak shamak’ catch line on television cookery shows, and his striking double coloured turban, to acting in a Bollywood movie, to participating in a reality television show, the multi-talented chef has a way with audiences worldwide.

Now he has shocked us again, penning a unique book “to spice up” leadership and management principles through the prism of cookery. His latest book The Biryani Leader, launched in Chandigarh on Monday, seeks to strike an unconventional connection between arguably India’s favourite dish biryani, the complex rice dish renowned for its rich flavour and distinct aroma, and management, which only Chef Harpal can.

This engaging and insightful book, published by StoryMirror, is a must-read for aspiring leaders, seasoned professionals, and anyone seeking to enhance his management skills. It is available at leading bookstores and online retailers.

“The title of the book, The Biryani Leader, captures the essence of my experiences – my journey of learning, exploring, making mistakes, bouncing back from them and eventually growing. Management may appear to be very complicated, and your goal may appear to be unachievable, but let me tell one thing: It’s not as hard as you think!” the bubbly chef shared with your own news website LifeInChandigarh.com during a one-on-one interaction on the sidelines of the launch.

In a preface to the book, he says “In my journey to becoming a chef, I was taught about the different aspects of cooking. Whether it was the ingredients, the recipes, running the kitchen or serving the authentic flavours, I did it all. But what struck me the most was the management side of things. Somehow, my brain started to automatically link every minute detail of cooking to management.

“Everyone loves biryani, and that is why I believe it is the perfect way to know and understand management. As a chef, I can relate anything to food and come up with a reference for you. But in this book, I chose biryani because I believe that nothing is as complex as human beings as a perfectly layered biryani. A successful and smooth-running establishment with multiple divisions resembles a multi-layered biryani”, he adds.

Elaborating further, he shares, “Biryani is complex, and so is management. Through the art of biryani-making, we can learn about team management. Just as every ingredient plays a crucial role in biryani, every member of an organisation has a part to play in making things work. Everyone has his own set of responsibilities. One slip from any team member can cause everything to fall apart. That’s how vulnerable a perfect biryani can be”.

In his foreword to the book, Subroto Bagchi, founder Mindtree, author and public servant, writes: “Reading Harpal, I think about my mother, relating every word of management, of Six Sigma Quality I learnt in Japan, to how she fed us, from supply chain management, to inventory control to cash flow to circular economy, not to leave aside customer satisfaction.”

“My favourite sentence from the book is ‘A perfect team is hard to achieve, and so is making good biryani. But it’s not impossible’”, says Puneet Chatwal, MD of Taj Hotels, in his testimonial. “This is such a profound takeaway – converting the impossible to possible through team work, determination and united purpose. A very engaging read indeed and a must for all in the field of hospitality”, he adds.

Sharing his thoughts in another testimonial, Dr. Chef Parvinder Singh Bali, Corporate Chef – The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development, says: “Through practical examples, insightful anecdotes, and well researched strategies, you (Chef Harpal) have provided readers with comprehensive guide to how to comprehend styles of management through culinary processes. From menu development and ingredient sourcing to staff training and customer service, every aspect of food and management is meticulously covered.”

“I have learned to expect the unexpected from Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi”, shares Ajay Gupta, Managing Director, Capital Foods, which owns brands like Ching’s Secret and Smith Jones. “His culinary journey, as a chef and entrepreneur, has led him to make an unconventional connection between biryani and management. It is sure to whet the appetite of those looking to make their management style more masaaledar!”

Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, who runs chains of restaurants in India and abroad, feels that hospitality sector should be looked at as a career of choice by the young, at par with engineer, management, medical, administrative services, and other seemingly more attractive career options. For this to happen, parents need to be supportive of their children and not continue to look down upon it.

Of course there is this initial struggle one has to go through, “and we have all gone through it”, but then the rewards of patience and focussed hard work are there for everyone to see, he emphasised. At the same he had a word of caution for the youth aspiring to enter the seemingly glamour world of hospitality, “it will be wrong to see only the success part of the story and not the years of struggle that went into building a success story”.

Sharing his own ultimate vision, which is shared by many other leaders in the culinary domain, of elevating Indian cuisine to the global stage through opening of fine dining restaurants, Chef Harpal, whose popular show ‘Turban Tadka’ holds the distinction of being among the highest-rated culinary shows in the history of television, maintained that Indian cuisine has “arrived”. The very fact that people around the world have started adopting several of the regional Indian cuisines in their kitchens is testimony to their increasing popularity, he added.

Speed Of Rescue Ops Saves Lives

0

How quickly rescuers can cut, bend and lift through metal doors, bars and sheets in case of a car crash, collapsed building or a mishapped passenger lift may prove decisive in saving lives of trapped victims. And so the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has equipped its Fire & Rescue Services with four kit sets (28 pieces) of such modern tools worth a whopping Rs 3 crore.

Mayor Anup Gupta on Tuesday handed over a set each of these seven such modern lightweight but powerful tools, including a hydraulic cutter, spreader, hydraulic power pack, battery operated strong arm and combi tool (performing both functions of cutting and spreading) and rescue ramset, also known as telescopic ramset, to the four divisions of the fire and rescue services department.

Demonstrating the power of these handy tools, personnel of the department effortlessly sliced off a piece from a 35 mm high-strength enforcement TMT bar with a hydraulic cutter. The Mayor also tried his hand at a battery operated combi tool.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Anup Gupta said the department of fire and rescue services needs to keep pace with the modern requirements to successfully handle unfortunate happenings and mishaps and these tool kits have fulfilled one of the requirements. The corporation is committed to provide the department with whatever else is required to make it an effective and modern force, he added.

Visibly enthusiastic at receiving these rescue tool kits manufactured by international brand Lucas, which not many fire and rescue services in the country can boast of, officers of the department said they are also in the process of procuring a 61 metre high hydraulic platform-cum-Turn Table Ladder (HPTTL) for undertaking fire and rescue operations in high rise buildings across the Chandigarh tricity.

This will augment the two existing 42 metres high HPTTLs, which are in the process of being rejuvenated by shifting their superstructure onto new chasses. Five new water tenders (Type-B) and two special purpose foam tenders are also being added to the department’s fleet during the current financial year, they shared.

Recently, staff strength of the department was substantially increased by recruiting 240 firemen and 32 drivers. It also purchased 56 sets of breathing apparatuses for the personal safety and protection of fire fighters.
